However, if you don't mind bare bone graphics or rather lack of them, you may give "Aurora 4X" a try. It is similar to DWU in some ways.
Aurora 4x has more in-depth ship designer, where you actually design your weapons, engines and other modules from scratch.
But I warned you, if you are looking for a good looking game, it is not one of them (No, it is not outdated, new update will be coming out in few weeks, maybe a month or two).
As I said in the above post, Aurora 4x does.
It is basically DWU, but:
-It has more text... and less graphics.
-Ability to create custom components.
-An option to genetically modify an existing race into a new one.
-Terraforming of planets.
-Micromanagement of your fleet officers, you can create custom medals for them too.
-An option to start on a single planet with multiple races/factions/nations at once (i.e. multiple earth factions going into space).
However it isn't as fleshed out, there are still couple of missing stuff here and there, but most stuff is in there.
The most common working ones are:
-Civilian sector.
-Different resources required for manufacturing.
-Big universe (tell your CPU to hold its pants in the late game...)
-Plenty of alien races.
But yep, as said before, it's not mainstream game, it's a small indie project, just like dwarf fortress but with a working interface and readable graphics.
Quite a few people called DWU a spreadsheet game, which I think it stretching it too far, but as for Aurora, they would be completely right, cause that is exactly what it is. Although that doesn't make it bad in any way tbh :)
Those people probably see the connection between dwu and eve online which is most definitely a spreadsheet game if you want to do more than run missions in empire space. As to dwu being a spreadsheet game I don't really see it either as the economy takes care of itself for the most part and you just generally guide it unlike in eve where its as close to real life competative markets as you can get in a game.
I on the other hand found lots of fun in the game, and as I expected, it was much easier to get into for me than Dwarf Fortress. Took a few hours, but nothing crazy. 4-5hrs and you know enough to play quite a bit of it. However due to the way the game is built it relies a lot on your imagination, which is a direct result of the design = lack of graphics to present things to you.
I only stopped due to some performance problems, a lot of which are getting patched in the next (soonTM) update. As I said, it requires a specific kind of person to play and enjoy, but the fun is there, and it is plentiful.
If you wanna make Dwarf Fortress more accessible try out the lazy newb pack.
It's closer to StarDrive 2 than Sword of the Stars 1.
One issue is that it only really runs well on Windows 98 and XP...
dont get me wrong, its great and unique and i love it...but its about most inaccessible game, even for many veteran PC gamers ['excel sheet' like game]
Thats not its fatal flaw though - sadly, performance is. Damn that puny Visual Basic...
upgraded CPU to 4790K and turn times in my game with only 2 AIs went from 12 minutes to 3.5mins, which made my game playable for another couple of weeks, until they grew back to 5mins+...
so, beware. Its hands-down best game to roleplay scifi empire story, but very troubled one.
If only Aurora 2 in C++ was even close to done...
Distant worlds replaced MoO2 some years ago, and looks like it will keep the Champion title for many years to come (Distant Worlds 2 ;) )
