Font too small - any work around @ 2560x1440 ?
I purchased this last night and started briefly on 27 inch monitor and found the font so small on the option screen. As far as I can tell there are no options to change the resolution or font. From searching threads I don't think there is a .cfg file I can edit to fix this issue.

So two questions: Is there a windows 7 64 option to tell the system to use larger fonts and/or is there a way I can have this game launch at a lower resolution (such as 1920x1080) ? (I do not want to change the resolution of the monitor because that will screw up placement of icons on the desktop and I do not have this issue with any other games I play (which makes me reluctant to change windows 7 settings but perhaps there is an option to do this) ?

Also is the option screen the only play with excessively tiny fonts or is the same size used everywhere ?

youre gonna have a bad time at that res. you gotta change your desktop resolution before you launch, sorry man. id probably just get over the messing up of your desktop icons and enjoy the game. theres other stuff you can do like make a different user profile in windows or something with a lower reso so it doesnt mess up your regular desktop, or theres some program that switches resolution but i dont know what its called and i dont know if it will mess up your desktop icons.

like the other poster said, lower your resolution will help you out, also increasing the windows font size will help. the ingame UI and fonts are scaled from your windows res and font size.

im actually not sure if the font size helps. it might for like the galactopedia but the parts of the game that are hard to read anyway it doesnt have an effect on. i actually just put mine back to normal and ive been fine since they patched.

Create a new user profile for your win7, call the profile DWU-Timesink, set its resolution to an appropriate value, consider the user switching an added load time.

If I createa new profile how do I share file between profiles ? Is there anyway to have it switch resolution at launch time ?

I take it you're young, because if you weren't you'd know that there is nothing any corrective eyewear can do to counter all the degradation in vision that occurs as you get older.

The trouble with changing the resolution is that it makes the display look blurry; I didn't find it helped me.

I also have/had trouble with the small fonts on my 24-inch 1920x1080 monitor. I poked around the DW forums on Matrixgames and came across references to 12noon Display Changer (http://12noon.com/?page_id=641). I set it to switch to 1440x900 when DW:U launches and switch back to 1920x1080 whenDW exits. Works great for me. It did move a few icons around, but I had a few too many on my Desktop anyway and moved some to some folders...a small price to pay to be able to play and enjoy the game.

actually i know glasses make vision far worse. your eyes become reliant on corrective vision glasses and when you take them off you notice your eyesight is far more blurry than it ever was before! :)

why i say specsavers is because ive know games ruined by font size changes..... seriously, forgot what game it was now but a while back there was a game with ok level font size, then people complained it was too small and next minute they changed it and then half the text is off my screen and everyones saying its perfect! LOL .... thats why i say specsavers :)

Ok, fair enough. Actually some people were complaining about a similar thing in DW, in that the font size change at the top made the text too large for them. I guess you can never keep everyone happy. :-)

I tend to get cranky about vision nowadays. I used to have near perfect vision, and now i don't, but I don't wear glasses (except when legally required to), and (generally younger) people are full of advice about how I should wear glasses. Apart from certain very specific situations, I don't find glasses help much. I still have to put the bloody light on to read anything in the evening.

If you don't mind playing in windowed mode:

whereversteamisinstalled\steamapps\common\Distant Worlds Universe\Startup.ini

You can set your resolution there. Also you can disable the intro movie there as well.

can you change the resolution there and to let it run in fullscreen?

but why can't the dev now implement a resolution option ingame? i mean with the steam release this kind of standard should now be introduced. it shouldn't be too hard to implement i imagine and some new players could get some real problems with no res option as it seems.

To my knowledge and experience, it will only work in windowed mode. To change resolution fullscreen, you would have to change it for the OS.

Ok I will try some of these things next time I start up; I think I might wait for the next patch first. I'm not sure about the rest of the game since I gave up on the options window but those font were pretty darn small @ 27 inch resolution even when I had 15/15 eye site. Yes I can read it even now but it is a pain. Mind you if the rest of the game has larger fonts it is not the best world but at least not a total disaster.

besides lowering the desktop resolution, have you tried incresing the font sizes (there are several options) of your desktop? those affect the game aswell. before the universe release i had to switch resolution OR increase font sizes on my new computer to be able to play the game. on 1920 x 1080 it was quite hard to read, but decreasing resolution and / or increasing font size helped me. luckily after universe i don't have to do it anymore and they work fine on my 21.5" monitor.
