Want to buy game - but not enable IE
Hello,

I was about to buy the game but I read that you need to enable Internet Explorer (I have since long uninstalled IE as it is virus prone and slow). Is it impossible to run this game without it? And what is the logic behind this?

The logic behind it is, that there is an ingame "galactopedia" which uses the IE base to run (since most windows computers still have IE).
You can have IE installed and enabled, but never start it yourself and put it behind your firewall to never access the internet, the game just needs its resources for displaying offline stuff ;-).

As said, if you refuse to install IE, don't buy it. The same for windows media player.

You can however make sure to never launch IE yourself, and it will not add any danger to your web browsing.

What they said...I have IE installed, I removed it from the task bar and just never use it except cases like this game. All works just fine. Just if you reisnatll IE, do remember to make sure your preferences stay pointed to the browser of your choice.

This is not correct.

IE's vulnerabilities sometimes do not require IE to be the browser used. Just beaing able to call the a vulnerable program can cause problems.

Many vulnerabilities doesnt require any program installed on computer except widows so sure way is to never turn it on (also remeber to unplug it because of wake on lan). To think of it, best thingto do is to remove hard drive and put it through meat grinder. Pure security.

If you install IE it in no way will open your computer to any harm!
IE is (somewhat) dengerous (in older versions) only while you surf in shady places.
the latest IE is quiet secure, Microsoft really works hard to fight Chrome and Firefox,
and they did a good job!

... Tusk after what i just read from you in another thread you need to stop giving people advice that you clearly have neither the authority or professional experience to give ...and if you ARE a professional and still think that statement is true then it is time to consider a new career.

I can prove on a weekly basis that IE is the WORST and WEAKEST of all the browsers when it comes to vulnerbility just come to the workshop and take a visit and i will give you a tour and show you the percentages but PLEASE stop posting like you know what you are talking about it is vile.

Internet Explorer 11 using Enhanced Protected Mode is very secure.
even more so if you use the 64 bits Enhanced Protected Mode.

with EPM, everything is essentially sandboxed with an Integrity Level of App Container, which is even safer than a low Integrity Level..
you can also add Tracking Protection.

Any web browser is only as secure as the user that is using it.

that's true.
when it comes to computer security, the user is ALWAYS the weakest link.

Hi Daniel,

Unfortunately, IE includes some components that Windows uses for tasks that do not involve accessing the internet or web browsing. If IE is completely removed, it also breaks those functions. Distant Worlds does not use IE for any kind of internet access, it only uses those components for completely offline functions, if that helps.

Regards,

- Erik

Seriously?
The person is right.
I can copy/pasta some media articles about IE and even Java.
I use all the software myself because I like gaming too much not to.
