Report a translation problem
First, you must have a mutual defense pact with another empire.
Then in the diplomacy window, double click that empire in the list and you'll get a box to type in an alliance name. Do that for the other empire and you'll see the name change for your empire as well.
Repeat with other empires you have a mutual defense pact with.
Double clicking yourself in the diplomacy window will get that alliance name window to popup, but it won't change anything. This is because this system is so you can have different names for your different relationships with other empires. You could have a mutual defense pact with 2 empires but they may not have that agreement with eachother.
Like I don't have to name my fleets using a complicated naming hierarchy but at least the game gives me the ability to and it helps me keep my 80 fleets organized.
I just like the game's philosophy towards automation and convenience. You don't have to do it but you have the ability to do if you wish.
