Carrier swarms. Anyone got any tips in fighting them?
I mean, wow! Those are Tairoshans and quite kicking my ♥♥♥ even though I am much stronger...at least in theory :D

All my ships bar frigates and escorts got at least 1 point defence, up to 4 on battleships and carriers. Carriers make up at least 10-20% of my fleets. Yet when this shows up, hell ensues. My Large Space Port with 7k shields and about 1000k armor with @1200+ damage doesn't far well against such an attack, even when accompanied by 4 defensive bases with slightly lower numbers.
I got away from this war by paying few millions but god, I am having trouble fighting that. I am pretty sure my tech is MUCH better than theirs yet nothing beats those swarms of fighters/bombers (reminds me of Enders games lol).

They just warp in, launch fighters, spread out and keep the distance thus I am unable to focus fire the carriers. Catching them is kinda problematic too, mostly light ships can outrun them, but those get shredded to pieces before they can do any real damage. Their carriers have about 3k shields and god knows how much armor.

I am now trying to deploy specialized AA battleships with 25 point defence each and hoping it will make a difference, but so far 80% carrier, rest cruisers (or so) works very well for them.

I think this is just a single fleet, they usually bring 4 or more :p

Great, gotta edit myself the galactopaedia help file and add in specific weapon focus for each race so I know what to research when (if) I use auto design. I am too lazy to check it each time xD

Great! This is precisely what I wanted. Gotta secretly manipulate some more, looks like I might be good at it. :D

Since there hasn't been much discussion on counter-strategies yet, I'll just mention a test game for 1.02, where I just watched a Keskudon fleet (Torpedoes using Point Blank tactics, pull-in Tractor Beams, max Acceleros Engines) kick the living snot out a Tairoshan Fighter/Bomber fleet.

I'm still pretty new to the game but... wouldn't the answer to fighter swarms be area weapons? If you've got a swarm of bees headed for you, a flame thrower works really well.

I am not sure whether area weapons affect fighters as well, only PDs might do that. Also, using area weapons is always dangerous, it is incredibly hard if not impossible to not have friendly fire happen.

Also keep in mind that the AI is psychic. They always know which of your ships have captains/admirals on board and will always target them first.

You can use this to your advantage by making sure that your "Point Defense Porcupine" ships are the ones with captains on them, so as to lure in all the enemy fighters to them (where they can be taken care of better) and away from everything else.

That is kinda interesting. I often have a feeling the AI knows when I am retrofiting my fleets and hit right at that moment. I bet that feeling is more or less right.

I'd like to see area weapons target swarms of fighters and bombers. If you have PD weapons though, I think the auto-targeting doesn't attack them with anything but the PD. At least that's been my experience.

I think that area weapons would absolutely wreck the fighters haha

Well to be fair:
fighter pods eat up 50(upgraded 45) size.
Unless you're willing to invest similar amounts of size to counter them (8~10 PD), you should not expect to come out ahead

Nasty buggers alright.

I play vanilla only and personally never used the tech (yet), but from the looks of it, i think the "answer" to such attacks - is some number of Resonant Graviton Beams. In Vanilla with all upgrading tech, the weapon has 320 range without any big damage drop, while top-tech fighters' max range is 240, and top-tech bombers' - 340. From the weapon's description it seems it gotta damage multiple targets in its line of fire, because it says "ships" and it says "waves". Ignoring all shields and armor, and having high damage, those beams should in theory make short werk of fighter swarms no matter how many come - the more the merrier even.

Then in theory the enemy could use "super missile bombers" with their range of 620, but those can be countered by using high-tech Ultradense armor, even if not assuming that missiles of those bombers would be doing only half damage to armor: those missiles do 10 damage per hit, and that armor has exactly 10 reactive rating to negate those low-damage hits.

This all's a theory, but perhaps worth a try?
