2 DISASTER
I really cant imagine that dw2 is going to be better. Also dont see why most are hysterically positive about dw2.
It doesnt look that great, i have great doubts about transforming this fantastic 2D game into a 3D game. And its completely hollowed out ..only 7 races (no doubt the other races are coming with expensive future expansions)
I hope that im wrong, but im afraid not.
Pros:
I'm actually learning on 2 and hope to come back here and try to tackle this monster of a game again.
Yeah, I don't hate DW2 enough to refund it but definitely going to be playing DW:U to scratch my 4X itch until DW2 runs stably and they add the currently missing features/content. The designer changes are a real kicker as now you have very little agency in the way you design ships.
DWU actually works (mostly) and I am quite happy to be playing it until they fix DW2 to the point it is worth buying. Lots of stuff in DW2 simply does not work.
It seems you can't trust anyone these days to not put out a half finished game and call it complete.
Distant Worlds 2 itself is mechanically far better than the first game but there's currently more content in Universe, which is to be expected considering it's a game that had years of patching and DLC.
With the original so cheap, you could try that one if you're not sure, and then if you like that, you're going to like the sequel because they're very similar gameplay wise.
Unfortunately this came at the expense of the best feature of the game - Ship Design, which was simplified into oblivion - replacing any semblance of customization with the busywork of simply putting the best component into the correct slot, much like a toddler trying to fit a square block into a square hole.
