Just installed Distant World Universe and it won't launch
Hi,
When I start Distant Worlds, it brings up a window with the top option being: "Play Distant Worlds". When I click on that, it brings up a small window that says: Distant Worlds Universe which is there for about 5-10 seconds before going away and nothing else happens. Any help would be appreciated.

Just to add more information, I am running a new Windows 10 laptop with a Nvidia Geforce MX330 video card.

I had the same issue after re-installing a few days ag on on a fresh copy of Win10.

I fixed it by installing the directx9 for windows 10 available from Microsoft:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

If that does not help the stickied Troubleshooting post in this forum has some more links to some requirements you can test out.

Thank you, installing the DirectX drivers and changing the Startup file to playmovie 0 got the game to start. Now the problem is the screen resolution. My default display is 3840x2160 which makes everything too small to read. Do I need to change my display resolution before starting the game or is there a way to set that in game? And if I need to change it beforehand, was is a good screen size to play the game in?
Thanks in advance

You can try this fix, someone just posted in recently to the official game forums:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4752207

It seems there is a compatibility setting where you can disable the DPI scaling to fix that issue by making a shortcut and starting the game via that shortcut.

Thanks, that did trick, even if it is a little convoluted .

Hi, I've bought the game. Unfortunatly it doesn't start either.
I've already change the Startup file to playmovie 0 but the link for directx9 is dead. I can't find an other link...
Can someone help me ?

Translation Google....

I uninstalled the game then reinstalled and before launching it, install DXSETUP.exe which is located "C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Steamworks Shared \ _CommonRedist \ DirectX \ Jun2010".

Then install Windows Media Player "Windows Settings / Applications and Features / Optional Features / Add Feature"

After installing Windows Media Player I just modified the startup.ini file which is located in "SteamLibrary \ steamapps \ common \ Distant Worlds Universe" by modifying "playmovie 1" to "playmovie 0" and neither do I did not touch the parameters for launching the executables.

Then I run the game directly through Steam and it works.

You'll need to install the following manually if its not working.

Go to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist

Install

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2010\vcredist_x64.exe and vcredist_x86.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\DXSETUP.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\DotNet\3.5\dotnetfx35.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\DotNet\4.0\dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\DotNet\4.5.2\NDP452-KB2901907-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\XNA\4.0\xnafx40_redist.msi

REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER

If you dont reboot none of the above installs will be done correct

That resolution is too high. This game is not even 3d. That means there is no aliasing. lol. The pixel art is restricted to the resolution of the bitmap. There's no silhouette edges like on a mesh.

This is a really REALLY good game.
