Can you auto retrofit a manual design?

I have manual upgrade and auto retrofit on some ships and bases, but the AI will never auto retrofitt them. My civilain ships are set on auto upgrade and retrofit and the AI retrofits them no problem. Every manual design I have to manually tell them to retrofit even though it is on auto. My construction ship is the only thing that is set to auto upgrade and retrofit that does not upgrade on its own. Am I missing something?

Yes, you have to enable the Design Automation.

Then, in the design list, disable the automatic upgrade, but keep the retrofitting automated.

Turning the Design Automation off basically sets everything to manual (the interface is a bit clumsy here, I agree)
