Any *RPG* games like The Walking Dead?
Are there any RPG games that...
1. Has a great story
2. Morally grey. No paragon or renegade juvenile BS such as ME series
3. has bad consequences for some choices you make. hold player accountable for choices.
4. the protagonist suffers a lot. he/she is not invincible storywise and has weaknesses like a normal human being
5. not about saving the world or even if it is, less cliche.
6. characters in the game have their own motivations and are not decorations to the protagonist's journey. If you treat them badly, they should really react and hate you like normal people. Interaction with world/characters should have a long term consequences more than losing approval points.

I wonder why nowadays it's so hard to come across an RPG that actually tells a good story like TWD, though TWD is not a RPG.

Out of possible candidates that partially or fully meet my requirements, I've already played..

The Witcher 2
Game of Thrones RPG
Unrest
Expeditions: Conquistador
Torment
NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer
Alpha Protocol
Dragon Age: Origins
Baldur's Gate 2
Elder Scrolls Series (don't fit any of those criteria)
Fallout Classic, NV
Mass Effect

Thanks in advance.

damn, you already mentioned Baldur's Gate and DAO. if you liked Baldur's Gate, you might have an interest in the upcoming Pillars of Eternity though. however, that is not released yet so I can not make it a recommendation. still, that is all I got at the time. You've listed a good amount of such games. Maybe I'll come across something and return.

Based on the list of allready played canidates maybe the Kotor games.
The 2 points they miss on are points 2 and 4.
Like most Starwars games, it ends up largely darkside or lightside, the one area I fault the series is the rather lack of a neutral or grey area.

I would also suggest a playthru of Last Of Us, simply cause while the story is rather set (it misses point 3 of your criteria) the storyline is most definately in that moral grey area and the protaganist (debate on whether to fully call him one) is most definately a flawed character that suffers.

May surprise you to learn that Papers, Please has all six criteria you're looking for. Just isn't an RPG.

Dead State might be worth checking out.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/239840/

It's an indie/kickstarter title that is currently in beta, slated for a fall/winter 2014 release. I wouldnt get the beta to play the game in its current state, best to wait for the final release, but its worth keeping an eye on.

A zombie apocalypse RPG that is heavily story driven, your choices on what you do with your group of survivors does impact the game, good or bad, plays similar to classic X-Com/Fallout turn based strategy. Tons of character customization, itemization, etc.

The first thing that came to mind was DAO until you reach point 5. But I see you already beat that. Decent game except the Deep Roads and the Magi Tower are extremely padded out and boring.

I would recommend a game that I like far more. Dark Souls 1. It is just a masterpiece. The moral greyness is probably the only thing that it shares in common with TWD. But it is also a brutal but free-form RPG. Completely packed with smart design.

Might want to have a controller on hand though.

Actually you're wrong to dismiss Mass Effect. You don't have to be paragon or renegade, you can make your choices ignoring the alignment and it actually is a wy more intrsting and challenging game doing so. don't write it off like that.
I honestly think it's the best series at character development around, it's like saying give me a good shark movie but not Jaws.

Try Fahrenheit (called Indigo Prophecy in USA). It's an RPG-adventure game, heavily story driven, and there are plenty of difficult choices. It's an old game, so the graphics might be outdated, but give it a try, it's amazing.

I actually played that one, and just want to add, pretty awesome start to the storyline as far as intial catayst of events.
I actually still have my PS2 disc of it.
