The bars on the watch display combined indicators. The red bar shows HP and Energy (the hungrier you are, the lower your maximum health). The white bar shows Stamina and Hydration (the thirstier you are, the lower your maximum stamina).
So, the healing works - you healed to the maximum given your current hunger level. For precise indicators, use the PDA.
Doesn't the hunger offset fill with yellow? Like if you were at 50% health due to damage, it's just half red and black. But if you're hungry it's half red and half yellow? Or am I misremembering that... It's been a while, too much stuff going on.
The easiest way to understand this is to imagine that instead of red segments, we have 10 hearts. When your Energy is at 100%, all the hearts are big. When your Energy is at 90%, the rightmost heart becomes half its size. And when your Energy is at zero, all 10 hearts are small.
It's quite difficult to explain and understand, so I tried to simplify the meaning as much as possible in the previous post :)
