Do I need to play the first game?

Um, I'd say so, They're also about to release the first game but updated with the new features of the second game.

It's worth noting that from the Steam page, the IV1 remake is a DLC for IV2, so you'll have to buy IV2 first.

I played the first game for only a couple of hours, and started with this one now since it was on sale.
I must say, you are not missing a lot if you didn't play the first game, tho it did make me more curious about it's story.
