...is that you get an increasing number of extra lives with every world you complete. As long as you stay focused on progressing and learning from your mistakes, you're gonna have a tough time running out.
But losing all 1001 lives and being stuck every 3 lives with an unskippable death screen sucks. Thanks to whoever mentioned editing the save file! Looking at that, I see that I have died a total of 1582 times so far. And i'm only near the end of world 5... lol
Actually that's *not* the idea. If you play these types of games with the mentality that you should avoid death, you will get frustrated very fast. When it comes to difficult precision platformers or "masocore" games as some people call them, the best way to play them is to play experimentally, let yourself die dozens of times just trying things to see what you can get away with, and when you find something that is fast and repeatable, you have yourself a consistent setup that you can use to reliably get to the choke point that's causing you to die. You have to be willing to die a lot and treat the whole level as a sequence of obstacles/puzzles to get through rather than be avoiding death, spending a bunch of time watching obstacles, hesitating to jump into something, and despairing when you get past an obstacle you've never gotten past before only to immediately die to a trap. Death is very much a game mechanic you are intended to use in a game like this, not a consequence for playing badly nor something you are scored on. Experiment, die, learn, execute. THAT'S the idea.
And even then, with me happily throwing away lives just to see if I can get through some obstacle one cycle faster or do something more efficiently or figure out how I can seamlessly rush through something in sync with the cycles, I don't think I even died 1000 times in my entire playthrough (which consisted of beating ukampa with all 17 characters and beating antarctica with just aban), let alone came close to losing the, by then, multiple thousands of lives I had. The most times I died in a single level was 250 times, and that was a particularly egregious level in antarctica--we're talking endgame stuff, the level below that was barely over 100 deaths, and everything below that took me under 30 attempts on average. Did you know that every golden skull collected gives you a 1-up, and the golden trinkets in levels 2-6, 3-6 and 4-6 give you 50, 100, and 256 lives respectively? Add getting all the golden skulls on top of that and you can unlock more characters and collect those trinkets with *them* and you can easily get thousands of lives ((50+100+256) x 17 + 1001 = 7903) without having to buy any from the shop. By the time I bought the life insurance item which gives you infinite lives, I had over 4,000 lives. I only grinded the coins and bought it for the achievement (I have a tendency to get obsessively stuck in stupid or insane grinds early on which is why I avoid JRPGs, because I will literally spend hours grinding my characters to be so overleveled that I can just melee the boss to death in a few turns).

I can admit when I'm wrong. I did die over 1000 times, but again, that's across 17 ukampa runs and an antarctica run
