Total noob question: does number of troops ever increase?

I like this game but think it could really use a tutorial. Half an hour in and so much confusion; I have to keep looking things up to figure anything out.

Anyway, question is, does the number of controllable troops on ground ever increase? Or do we just get that squad/captain at the beginning and that's it?

You can either build troop barracks for new soldier types or a drop pod upgrade in the hardpoints of your ship to drop soldiers onto the battlefield.
