I do like your other suggestions, though. One of the first things I tried to do was rally to my captain. Also I tend to waste a lot of effort from not paying enough attention.
1. By default it does bring up the building menu when you deselect. You can also press B and it will bring it up. Though currently there is only numpad mapping for the specific buildings and building category buttons. But I hope to add more hotkeys for them in a future update.
2. In 0.2 I added a slight click sound when cycles roll over. But I may also add a subtle visual cue on the cycle meter as well.
Rallying on to units is a good idea. It's been suggested before so I'm hoping to include it in 0.2.1.
One suggestion: when selecting "Horde Faction" or "Difficulty" during survival mission select the UI shows that the selected option is dull while the remaining are bright. It's a bit confusing as you expect the inverse where your selection is bright and stands out. Just a thought!
