Getting hints from Tim
How exactly does this work in the game?
His note says he'll read my mind if I concentrate on the puzzle I'm stuck on.
Which I assume means in terms of gameplay to wait around in the room or specific puzzle you're stuck on for a while and then head straight back to the footbridge, but this doesn't seem to work for me.
There is still only his original note there and he's not talking to me, so is there a certain amount of time I need to spend at the point I'm stuck? Or is there a time limit to get "straight back" to the footbridge or a direction I should approach from?
I would really like to use the ingame hint mechanic rather than resort to a guide, hope somebody who has used it can clue me in.

Nope, he does not work like a hint system. The letter is only there for story purposes, but there is no help if you stuck.
I had some html files on the disc version that contained hints but still did not tell/spoil you what to do like a walkthrough. I try to search for that file and I will send it to you if you would like.
But here you can buy the companion for 2$

Wow quick answer! Thank you
That's a pity, but I suppose I'm spoiled these days with in game hint systems in PnCs.
Don't put yourself to trouble about it. I'm going to soldier away at it for now without a walkthrough I'm not actually stuck at dead end I still have plenty of ideas to try and one or two more places to discover.
I'm actualy really enjoying the game and making my own notes and figuring stuff out.
But cheers for the info :)

Ok had to report back, I actually got it to work by complete accident after having given up on the notion.
I had gone back to some of the puzzles I'd solved just to write down the symbols and was passing through the footbridge after visiting the bar and Tim spoke up to give me a clue about the piano and who it belonged to.
So there are some he will help with it seems but not all of them.

I went through the whole game without getting any help from Tim, despite trying. I did find it a bit frustrating that in a game with such abstract clues and puzzles - where a hint system would be handy and is advertised by one of the first characters you meet no less - that the hint system was so poorly implemented.

Yep I agree, was a nice idea from an immersion point of view but it doesn't work in a predictable or logical fashion.

Wish there was somewhere to listen to Tim's sound clips. I feel like I am missing out on a lot of back story by not getting those :tcry:
