Gray Matter

Gray Matter

SPOILERS - The Ending
One comment and two questions. Comment: Styles's uninjured face is actually hinted at several times throughout the game (much like the connection between Angela's father and the campus incidents). The twist becomes obvious for those who pay any attention. For example, in the Carfax Tower phonebooth has an article about a man who is psychologically traumatized and thinks he has become physically deformed. Dean Healy mentions that Styles is "physically" healthy/normal. Dr. Simon (Styles's old friend, I might have spelled that wrong) attempts to explain to Sam that Styles was thrown from the car and that it was impossible for a human to actually approach that kind of fire. Also, when Sam comments to the housekeeper (I forgot her name) about how much pain Styles's face injury must have been, the housekeeper responds that it's obvious that Sam doesn't know what she's talking about.

Questions:
(1) What caused the discus incident at St. Edmund's Dining Hall? Why *that* location?

(2) Bride of Frankenstein. Am I not making a connection here? I saw the Frankenstein novel in Sam's pack, but I just am not sure what that article/newspaper/note in the wind meant...

The newspaper in the ending had a Daedalus logo on it. Maybe there is a connection, maybe not. :)

Ah, it's late and may be you don't need this question anymore but here's my thoughts.
1) Maybe it's just because Angela's dorm room was nearby? I know it doesn't seem right but I don't have any clue, even though I replayed this game recently. She was sleeping every time when they had an experiment, so may be she dreamed about it.
2) After I replayed a game, I noticed a few detailes - that ghost of her father was like a hologram, so may be someone was playing a Grand game, or Deadalus club has more sinister role in the events. I know for sure that when Jane Jensen was on kickstarter, there was an option to choose Gray Matter 2. A plot was that David Styles and Samantha investigating the death of a young student with magical abilities. So it was a possible hint to a sequel which, unfortunately, will probably never be done.
P.S. I just came here from Jane's AMA on Reddit and that's what she said about David's scar
"David's scar -- SPOILER ALERT
Yes, when Sam finally sees the scar, she's sees that it hardly exists, that what David sees when he looks in the mirror is mostly in his mind (body dysmorphia) due to his needing to believe he was badly burned trying to rescue his wife. *********************************"

Really enjoyed the game. One of the few adventures of higher quality concerning dialogues, Styles voice over and puzzles even despite obviously low production costs with those cheap cutscenes and the usual mediocre animations and cutting corners in some other regards. Special postive mention goes to the music, songs as well as score, which supports and elevates the whole game.
While I prefer playing games in which you can choose your character's personality I found it interesting to play such a manipulative female-dog-in-heat that still is relatable in the same way as playing as GK, who's an arrogant prick, but also relatable. Jensen likes to use more difficult protagonists.
But the ending was just such an easy way out and so over-used and unimaginative, wrgh.

  • That the last happening was in the dining room was I think just to throw the player off more than for a sensible reason, but it could be argued that Styles mentions it in the session, therefore putting it in Angelas mind.
  • Like so many stories there are often imperfections / unresolved ideas / story threads that were considered, but then dismissed and never cleaned up that shine through. I don't like it and it puts me off everytime, but ces't la vie.
  • I was sure the "Bride" thing was a teaser for a possible sequel. Not a very imaginative one.
  • It's interesting what henrywayat wrote about the Jensen comment. Clears up what at least the writer's intention was. The game didn't make it clear one way or another, but it was something that I thought it could be both ways and it doesn't really affect the story. Reminded me of Vanilla Sky, though.

A few questions of my own: I don't think so, but is there some kind of change when not getting all the bonus points for looking at things? Is Jane Jenson working on something else than a remake of GK?
