Zero only has 2 generations, while the 1st has 5. (I am not sure how Digest mode is as I have never gotten to it But I think I remember hearing somewhere that you can't choice your spouse or something)
But I love Zero more myself. Even though it only has 2 generations, it gives more time for the characters to develope themselves. In the 1st game the generations were going to fast for me (Granted that if you take out battles since battles are slow; more so in the 1st game where loading the battle takes forever. Not sure if it was fixed in the PC release)
The story is solid like the first Agarest but obviously, there are only 2 generations here compared to the 5 in the original which I actually prefer compared to the latter because while 5 gens made the game really expansive and introduced a lot of characters, and interactions, I felt like they didn't get as much character development to Zeros' characters for some of them, more specifically, the heroines for each generation. We don't get to learn or know more and by the time we did, it was the end of the generation. Now I'm not saying I dislike that because Agarests' one of my favorite franchises but I felt it could've been much better if it spent more time on character development for various characters, especially gen specific characters like Noah, Hildegard, Duran, etc.
While I miss the first Agarest, I'm going to have to ultimately pick Zero, because I just enjoy the characters more overall since they've had better development, the story felt more fleshed-out and depth even though it was fairly generic like the first one and since the game doesn't feel like a long chore compared to the first game, where it take forever to absorb everything in such as high difficulty spikes in combat or trying to avoid monsters in a dungeon and finishing all 5 gens (especially on true end). I wanted to do another playthrough but after 150 hours to complete my first playthrough, I just wore myself out.
In the end though, I still love both games and I'm really excited to look forward to Agarest 2.
