For instance as Malkavian you will always wear armor that is completely silly. You start with that schoolgirl outfit as female Malkavian and later get to wear clothes of prosti**tes (police and cowboy themed) and the like. If a clan starts out with a suit or other formal wear, chances are the clan will only have formal wear, etc.
Also, you will play a good 10 hours before you see your first new set of armor, so if you don't like a clans appearance get ready to look at it for a long time.
It is possible to change the full appearance of the character by completely replacing the model that is used, but you will have to tinker around with some files and doing it wrong could eventually break the game.
