Tremere are a solid choice if you prefer playing magi in other games.
I'd steer clear of Malkavian and Nosferatu for the first time around. They are radicially different from the other clans, and I think they can be better appreciated after at least one playthrough.
Tremere and Ventrue are slightly different. Tremere get a different haven, Ventrue have to be picky about who they feed from. First timers can easily screw things up.
Malkavian and Nosferatu are horrible for the first timer. Malkavian dialogue is very difficult to understand if you don't already know the basic gist of the plot. Nosferatu have some limited quests, dialog, and they can't always take the easy path.
Malkavian as your first playthrough I do not recommend. They're so whacked out I was mightily confused (my first attempt was Malkavian but it was so jarring... inanimate objects talked to me and I was insane).
Toreador, Brujah and Gangrel are fairly "standard", but I felt that they took away from the immersion a little. Nosferatu is probably the most difficult, as you can't walk around most of the time.
Tremere are the pasty brainy types. They die easily unless you're well stocked up on range weapons. Which cost money.
You will shine in dialogues and 'transe' from your dominate discipline will help you sneak past bad guys.
late game it didn't even matter because i was hitting everyone for upwards to "400!" damage a hit
