Of course. The UP 9.0 works just as it works with retail copies. I've tested it on both my retail + Steam copies btw.
Well Deus Ex was linear too, in that the story forced you through each of the different hub worlds. In this game you can quick-travel between places, tackle objectives your way and sell/buy items like you would in any RPG.
I'd say it's non-linear but not open-world like Skyrim.
Something in the middle. You can free roam in each hub, but the hubs open up one after another and the story of course is linear, otherwise is couldn't be as great as it is!
I saw it on steam sales and checked it out, soon as i saw what it was about i was interested so bought it.
Not regreted it one bit. The game is amazing. Instant classic for me, surprised i was so late to the party on this one.
For me --> it's the writing + the lore. Great atmosphere, plays similar to a Deus Ex game and has vast replayability with each of the different clans.
I wouldn't say nostalgia is the sole reason for this game being so loved. I recently got 2 of my mates playing this and even though they admitted, like you, that the combat system was weak... they've finished it and called it one of their best games. Of course, to fully appreciate this game you must understand this was released a while back - before Half Life 2 and that it is a little buggy here and there.
Like Deus Ex and many other games, Bloodlines is much better than the sum of its parts, but I don't think it's aged as well as a lot of games that are even older than it, due to the unfinished development. Still excellent in many regards, though.
I would like to disagree. With the Unofficial Patch plus a lot of unfinished content has been restored and just comparing the Chinatowns of Bloodlines and Deus Ex clearly shows, that Bloodlines is still the superior game in every effect!
