Do I need the unofficial patch to be able to play the game?
Hi, I haven't started the game yet. I know the game is incredibly buggy because it was released unfinished, but is it necessary to download the fanmade patch to be able to properly play the game? Are the bugs going to break my game if I don't? Thanks in advance.

Yes you do. Use the "Basic" version of the patch if you want to stay as faithful to the vanilla game as possible. Use the "Plus" version if you want some extra goodies in your game.
I know it is possible to run vanilla using dgVoodoo2, albeit with a lot of tweaking. However, for the Steam version, it is probably best to use the Unofficial Patch.

Yes it helps out tremendously.

If you want the game to run at all, yes, you need the unofficial patch. Though, I don't recommend you use the Plus version if this is your first playthrough since it brings significant changes compared to vanilla.

No. Do not use them. Vanilla version runs and plays perfectly fine. The unofficial patches introduce a bunch of new bugs so the developer can continue "fixing" the game forever. The plus version especially is a complete mess of terribly implemented new content that was not in the original game and was not meant to be. Don't be tricked by people saying you have to use these unofficial patches.

Vanilla versions will not even start on modern computers unless you limit the RAM or do some other complicated tweaking. Unless you buy it from GOG which has the patch included!

This is blatantly false. I downloaded the steam version of the game last week and spent the whole week replaying the game. I did no tweaking, no fan patches, just downloaded off steam and played. I am on Windows 10. Finished it yesterday, had 0 game breaking bugs or crashes during my playthrough.

And you had no memory warnings or bad textures? It is known that Bloodlines has problems if the PC has more than 2 GB RAM!

Actually, a friend of mine told me he was able to get it running on Windows 11 Home straight out of the box. Since I was skeptical of his claim, I asked him to install a clean copy and send me screenshots... which he did. So I can testify that the screenshots he posted was at its original default settings - just as it was with a clean install on Windows 10 using dgVoodoo2 on Steam, plus my old physical disk install that I've had since Windows 7 on my laptop. (As I think back on it now, v.1.2 patch did run way back when I was running it on WIn7 Pro at 64bit.)

It makes me wonder... is there something going on with the Windows versions since 8 and DirectX9?

Unofficial patch sucks don't use it, just play vanilla.

I had no issues thus far without the unofficial patches (albeit, to be fair, I barely played the game). I will play the vanilla version in my first playthrough and once I finish it I might try the patch to see how it goes, at least to add new content.

If you've never played Bloodlines before, I always recommend playing vanilla (or the Basic install of the Unofficial Patch) first. However, I think you'll enjoy the UP's Plus install much more because of all the new things it adds... since Trokia wasn't able to finish the game as they intended.

If you are using dgVoodoo2 to get it running, it is not a native installation...

What's the deal with this sudden attack on Wesp?

The UP has been used for years by many players. I've had the game since 2004. I'm not sure how many years the UP has been around but I've used it since it first appeared.
