I'll gladly let them infect me with malware for this masterpiece.

This game has been infecting me with malware since i bought it on Steam. :D
It's a false positive.

I have played the game since it came out in 2004, never had even a false positive.

The bottom line is Steam checks for viruses, if you have a virus it did not come directly from this game.

The only other reported false positive was with the unofficial patch, not the game itself. So if the is the same in your case, if you are really worried, then do not use the patch, however again many have used the patch for years and not had any issue.

IF it directly this game, remember everyone accesses the same images on Steam, so if the virus was in the game itself, we would all be infected and we are not.

Virustotal comes up with a single flag out of all the security companies, and if you read the details, it's because the app makes registry changes, which I mean, yea, you're installing a program, it's going to do that.

I'm betting OP is having other issues with their computer and is getting paranoid and checking literally every file vs virustotal. You're going to get a lot of false positives doing that.

I mean, if OP is that paranoid about viruses, there's always linux. :P Much less chance of that happening on linux.

I've never had Bloodlines be tagged as a virus, ever. This is on a variety of machines using different AV software, including Microsoft. I do get the "do you want install software from an unknown source?" message when I install the Unofficial Patch, but I get that with any program Redmond hasn't blessed.

If you downloaded VTMB from Steam (or GOG) it's safe.

Single flag?

Registry changes don't automatically mean detection as malware. If that was true a lot more executables would be detected as malware.

Note: the scan results are from a fresh install. Can it really be a false positive after so long? I recently did a full system scan(with also thousands of games installed) and VTMB's .exe was one of two games detected as malware.

Another way of thinking about it is that given it's been so long, if it was genuine malware and not a false positive it would have been long since figured out and would have likely been delisted from Steam for being unsafe. Given that it hasn't done anything to anyone in all the years since release (and trust me, someone would have noticed by now), it's a pretty safe bet that it's a false positive and nothing to worry about.

It's possible the file was updated/changed without you being aware of it. Existing executables even when not updated can become infected as well.

Check the link and you will see which software detects it as 'bad'.

By the way I'm not claiming the file is harmful in any way, it was just a heads up.

I mean, at the end of the day - if freshly downloaded game from steam has a malware - write to Valve about it. I never had VTMB detected as a virus, and for a long time, i the UP wasn't detected either.
And if that was widespread, a lot more people would be commenting on the file being infected. So idk abou those results of yours, but the game seems fine.
Still. You could ask Valve for support.
Ceejay Jul 20, 2023 @ 10:50pm
Again, we all access the same files, if it was infected, we would all be infected. You are talking 100's of thousands of people (634k just through steam, and you can buy it standalone, so that figure will be much higher).

Its not a new game. A virus/malware would have been found by now. People have created mods and patches, someone would have seen something.

Do not get me wrong, its great for the heads up, however its a false positive.

Install the latest UP on top, which you need to do anyway, and the VirusTotal score should be down to 1 warning.

Sheesh, just when you think you can't find any more crazy stuff on the Internets, one other thing pops up...
