can i play this game without mods???
i want to play this game for the first time and unless the game is broken without them i would rather wait for subsequent playthroughs for any sort of mod, so my question is is there a mod that this game is actually unplayable without, i don't just mean unplayable to you anymore after 20 years, but seriously i want to play the game from beginning to end broken is something that prevents me from doing that, and after looking around for awhile i really can't tell, so i have it working on windows 10 mod free, am i good to go?? or will i run into something that makes me sorry that i tried to play vanilla like 10 plus hours in?

You are going to run into problems almost 100% guarantee. Whether they're small problems that are just annoying or major problems that prevent you from completing quests or even progressing the game, you WILL find problems.

What you want is the latest version of the Unofficial Patch(which is 9.6). When you install it, install UP Basic, as all this does is fix the bugs and such. It alters nothing, mods nothing, improves nothing, makes nothing harder or easier. All it does is make the game work. You WILL have to start a new game after installing as continuing your current game will also cause problems and that IS a 100% guarantee.

Yeah, if you want the vanilla experience, just install the Unoficcial Patch, but not the plus patch. Just the basic one. Without it, it'll definitely either crash or bug out and you won't be able to finish it. The basic patch just fixes that so you can finish the game. I remember years back when this game was new, i got to a certain point (not gonna spoil where), where the game consistently crashed and i couldn't do anything about it. And this was near the end of the game so the salt was real lol. The Unofficial Patch basic fixes that so you can enjoy the game mostly bug free, but more importantly, you'll be able to finish it. And it doesn't change anything from the original game.

Then when you finish it normally, install the plus patch, more stuff to do, and slightly different disciplines and stuff. Plus patch has some balance changes, restored content and some tweaked conversations. Fun all in all, but that could be considered a mod, so don't install that one if you want the original experience.

You'll have to start a new game after you install any of the patches (basic or plus patch), so don't patch the game while you're in the middle of it because your saves will be corrupted or at the very least generally buggy.
