you are actually pretty free in how you want to play the game
i have finished the games a few times
you definitely need hacking / lockpicking / combat defense
obviously spent a few points thraumaturgy if you play a tremere
a few points in melee because at the beginning till mid game you dont have alot of guns
when you are in the third town start to spend points in ranged so that you are able to use guns too
besides that spent a little bit in speech skills ... or dont depends on how you want to play XD
just play the game and have fun ;)
but i recommend a malk run after you know the story because alot of malk stuff only makes sense after you beat the game once
From a purely utilitarian perspective, persuasion is considered the most useful of the social skills, and combat defense is always nice to have. You can certainly get by without having it, but it makes things much easier.
Like Conker said, starting with melee and transitioning to ranged makes sense most of the time, but once you've geared up and invested sufficient points, it's largely a personal preference imo.
1. PC, Lock-picking, conversation
2. Stealth
3. Combat
With such a priority, I get to open up the most content in the game, make fighting more unique and difficult. If you do it the other way around, you get more of a hack-slash experience.
I am now thinking that perhaps for my priorities, Tremere is not the best build?
BTW, those who beat the game before any of the Unofficial Patches and then beat it again with Unofficial Patch, did the game become more enjoyable? I really hope to notice that extra restored content!
Some other questions:
Can this game be played properly with DS4/Xbox One controller?
That's not a bad series of progression in terms of stats, but make sure to keep up in terms of combat. The game's last third focuses heavily on combat, and it can be very difficult if you've been playing a social/sneak character. I made that mistake once, but as long as you're keeping up in disciplines or dropping the occasional point in your preferred fighting feat, you're good to go.
Honestly, it doesn't really matter which clan you pick (outside of Nosferatu and Malk) in terms of your build. It only really comes down to which disciplines you want to use. Toreador isn't a bad choice for the priorities you've laid out, but nothing to say that you can't have a talkative and sneaky Tremere.
Just keep in mind that the last 1/4 of the game is very shooter-centric, You can do it if you play smart and use your abilities to the fullest. Ming Xao will be your toughest fight and as melee she is a FEMALE DOG, I can tell you.
Personally, I hated the Chang Brothers the most. Ming Xiao was difficult, but I was well prepared for her after the headache the Chang Brothers gave me. Plus her base is crawling with free blood packs unlike with some other bosses. All I had to do was prepare for a long fight and bring blood packs.
