How does melee work?
Just got the game, how does melee combat work? Block seems to do nothing and when I hit an enemy they just quickly hit me back.

There should be a manual in Steam Library Links

There's a block? :steammocking:

Seriously though, block does nothing in most cases, and since it's an RPG, every move you do depends on what stats you have. I don't know what stat is linked to blocking, but melee is basically - get higher melee so you can wield more damaging weapons and do more damage. Someone will always hit you but with high dodge and a good armor you'll shrug off some of those attacks.

You have a feed button, use it in combat, fills up your health and blood so you can fight more.

Thanks for the tips, I also noticed using blood buff helps, when I hit them with blood buff active they don't hit me back and I don't seem to shrug off my attacks. So they're probably hitting back right away because my normal melee damage is too weak.

You can also see what the minimum melee ability requirement is when you look at a weapon. If you don't have the the Strength+Melee requirement for that weapon you can still use it but at lower effectiveness.

Yes, blood buff raises your stats for a while so that affects melee and dodge too.

You can also experiment with directional attacks. Each weapon has different moves depending on which direction you hold when attacking.

If you hold back then attack your character will jump at the enemy, left and right plus attack usually has some quick jab movements. Depends on the weapon of course.

But it's basically your stats vs theirs. If your melee is too low, no amount of blocking and dodging is gonna help you.

What clan are you playing? Maybe they're not suited for melee. Some clans are better with firearms. Use your disciplines to augment your fighting style.

I'm playing as Toreador. I wanted to potray a charismatic character so I picked him. I was thinking of going Gangrel but all social interaction skills seem to be low for him and I kinda care about that.

Toreadors are better at firearms, but you can do melee too. Celerity and presence are your friends in combat. Don't level up auspex since that is only useful for guns.

All are good but some clans are better at certain things than others. Ventrue can dominate people in doalogue but can't feed on rats bums and "ladies of the night because filter".

Gangrel are as you said, not the most social creatures but excell at fighting.

And so on and so on.
It depends. Try them all out, each has a different playstyle

have to block at the right time but it doesn't always work. the sword is the best weapon to use. if you hold the direction you will do different attacks. back+ atk does a jump atk and to the side does a different 3 hit combo and forward does a faster combo atk which finishes sending them flying.

celerity is awesome i must say. high enough lvl and it looks like you're in the matrix. can see spread from a shotgun blast and dodge them. they have the shockwave thing as they go by.

works better if u hit twice or once and move in a circle, with the abominations it works really well

Blocking is useless in this game because for the most part it means sitting around waiting for a blood to come rather then staying mobile and overpowering your enemies. If you're a toreador, then for melee, jump pump celerity and go to town.
