I awser a similar question in feb. So i will "copy/paste" here about World of Darkness:
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
If you want to know about Vampires in the World of Darkness, Vampire the Masquerade is the starting point.
So there is sourcebooks specifics to Vampires, like clanbooks, novels, description of cities (Like the sourcebook "Los Angeles By Night" and others "By Night" books.), Guide to Camarilla, Guide to Sabbat, The Book of Nod (Vampire Bible), etc...
Several things and Characters in Bloodlines are citated in the sourcebook "Los Angeles By Night".
***
But, if you want to know about ALL World of Darkness, the Core Books are those:
Primordial three:
- Vampire The Masquerade (Vampires and his Ghouls, and Sects)
- Werewolf The Apocalypse (The Werewolfs and the Spiritual Wolrd)
- Mage The Ascension (Mages and... Reality is a lie... Flee...)
Others:
- Wraith The Oblivion (Ghosts and the World of the Dead)
- Changeling The Dreaming (Fairies and the Dream World)
- Mummy The Ressurrection (bring the WoD to Middle East)
- Kindred of the East (Kuei-jin and WoD in Asia)
- Demon The Fallen (Demons, like in the Bible... or not exactly...)
And have those others who I dont read because they are not translated and distributed in Brazil (and also because my money and time becames scarse...):
- Hunter The Reckoning (A strange type of "choosen ones")
- Orpheus [Don't Look Back] (Mortals who can leave his bodies and travel into the Wolrd of the Dead)
Personally, I'm a big fan of WoD, and it's hard to find anything from them that is not made in an incredible way, have fun reading, i have a lot

Ah! Another thing! Well-timed your question. They announced that the 5th edition of Vampire the Masquerade will be released this year!!! Search for Vampire the Masquerade 5th edition and you will see.
Is the ultimate reading for any VtM fan. Originally published over dozen individual paperbacks, the PDF version collects these together into a chronologically correct volume. It is also available in 4 parts or as the individual books. I recommend the collected volumes though.
http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/3705/Clan-Novel-Saga-Complete?it=1
The reading is massive (3000ish pages iirc) and almost all excellent.
There are also other VtM novels besides the saga, the Lasombra trilogy and vampire dark ages novels spring into mind. But the clan novel saga is where its at. Trust me.
About the novels i dont know what recommend.
But if you want know more about Los Angeles in the Worl of Darkness, you can try the sourcebook called "Los Angeles by Night". Who describes the scenario before Bloodlines.
