Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Any advice for a gunslinger type character?
I feel like I'm nowhere close to knowing what I'm doing with this.

my first run I did as a Tremere with a decent enough melee skill to actually defend himself without Thaumaturgy. Now, though, I'm trying to do another runthrough.

Well, two runthroughs actually but one I don't need help with.

It feels like the starting pistol is pretty weak in the long run, and relying on it is pretty dangerous. I'm trying to do this as a Malk, and I'm actually kinda struggling against *humans*, dammit.

Also I'm using the latest (or one of the latest) versions of the unofficial patch with the optional stuff activated, including backgrounds.

Would there be a better clan for being a gunslinger character, and should I ignore trying to rely on guns until I grab a shotgun from the warehouse?

I usually play with melee, disciplines and guns aswell, and in my opinion it doesn't really matter what clan to pick for a gunslinger char.

The .38 starting pistol is awful, i'd even prefer the fists. I don't like the first shotgun either (shotguns in general, you have to be very close to the enemy and eat hits).

But you'll get very useful guns later in the game, especially after arriving in Hollywood, and Mercurio is a good help aswell and can organize rare guns, if you didn't denigrate him when talking to the Prince after the warehouse thingy (don't tell him that Mercurio ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up).

So, i'd say for seriously using guns, Santa Monica isn't the right place to start with, but you could start in Downtown, Fat Larry sells them and the russian guys are dropping them aswell. Both are possible to "contact" at the beginning of the story in Downtown.

The shooting skill is very very important for decent results.

level perception and firearms slowly through the first half of the game. guns aren't really worth using until you have atleast 6 points in ranged. also just an FYI killmatic is the best gun in the game so try and get it once you have cash.

Nope, having a Tremere Kindred as a Gunslinger is PERFECT, Heroic Skald Zach; of course you will have to get the most updated guns such as the Magnium 44, Uzi, automag shotgun, swords etc. You may have to get the longbarrel shotgun too, but if you can get the crossbow it would be great for you. I too am using weapons to supliment my magic. Yep exactly the Killomatic is very good. Being a Nosferatu, they won`t use guns more than likely, the Sabbat use weapons but are too dumb for them. Gangrel more or less don`t need them, Venture yessss are not dumb in the least but have Sherriffs like me to do their dirty work behind the scenes. La Croix is too much of a coward to go on the frontlines and take his own bitter pill but I would not be surprised if LaCroix has a weapon or 2 under his suitcoat.

Any clan with Auspex and/or Celerity are great with guns.
Just don't use guns at lower levels cause they suck.

Just don't use guns at lower levels cause they suck. Just bite everything to death and use your disciplines instead. Or you know, use them but don't expect miracles. Guns are only worth it later in the game.

I wasn't doing a Tremere Gunslinger, I'm doing a Malk Gunslinger.

Should I do Tremere instead?

Not necessary, in my opinion. A Malk can even get higher dexterity and protection skills, and strength - but only for drinking if you don't use melee attacks.

The Tremere are known for better disciplines, but on the other hand they can't help you within conversations as the Malk one does (if you level it up).

And the conversations with the Malk... priceless ; )

Personally, i think guns are wasted on a Malkavian character since they know Obfuscate. And once you know Obfuscate lvl 4 or more the game becomes a joke and you can put all the points you would have put into guns in other skills instead making a Malkavian character very versatile.

You can use guns with a Malk but you really shouldn't, they know Obfuscate for a reason. Also, other Dementation disciplines don't really help in gunplay in any way so yeah...

If you want a gunslinger, make a Toreador with high seduction, lvl 5 Celerity, lvl 5 Presence and fairly high firearms skill. Now that's an insane gunslinger, and if you want that type of character, you'll enjoy a gunslinger Toreador a lot. I know i did.

Malks are... Not for guns. :steammocking:

Have Celerity. Also invest in your Haggle, so you can afford ammo for your high end toys.

For Tremere Vampire Characters the basic disciplines work just fine. Things such as Blood Strike, Blood Salvo, Blood Bluff etc. Toreador, a gunslinging Sherriff caring if he kills humans or not.....he would be a Dukes of Hazzard county sherriff with a brain more than Rosco P Coltrain. He would jail Boss Hog FINALLY.

Nope, a Malkavian Vampire Sherriff Gunslinger would be PERFECT, Wiatt Eurp that is Bipolar.....WONDERFUL!

Yeah a Tremere doesnt need firearms, when that gun symbol pops up the Trem can just use Thaumaturgy and curbstomp everything. If you want a backup skill go with melee or unarmed.

Toreador for that sweet, sweet Celerity and you'll be playing Max Payne pretty much.

I usually only buy guns i can't get from enemies that have them, and i think the earliest such occurance is Hollywood. By then i just use whatever enemies drop and it's fine. Also, using the guns enemies drop ensures you never run out of ammo or have to buy ammo.

The most powerful weapons are endgame only content so you'll either get them from Mercurio or endgame enemies. By then, just save your money and use what enemies drop.
