What’s your favorite character(s)?
The main reason I keep coming back to this old game, when I have so many newer ones in my library, is the richness of its characters.

The quality of the writing, in terms of character and dialogue, is simply beyond any other game I’ve played. Even Grim Fandango or Planescape: Torment doesn’t reach it.

I have narrowed it down to a top ten list. But virtually all the characters in this game are great, even minor ones like E and Bishop Vick are memorable. Anyway, here’s my list, along with one of the character’s best quotes:

1. ‘Smiling’ Jack
“Lotta tension out there. Lotta fear. Lotta jittery, high-strung predators clingin’ to their little pieces of eternity.”

2. Nines Rodriguez
“People say these nights are bleak, but then, haven’t we always been damned?”

3. The Cab Driver
“This is the path of legends and pariahs. I have walked before with those who have tried to cast off Jyhad. Their reasons where many, but their paths always ended in the same place: emptiness.”

4. ‘Gorgeous’ Gary Golden
“En garde, Toreador. You vainglorious, narcissistic poseur! How I loathe that determination of your kind to belie your true nature with Paris fashion and pomp. You are a dead thing – a creature of the shadows. Start acting like one.”

5. Bertram Tung
“Wherever there’s an ounce of power to be had, there’ll be people dickin’ each other over. You think the Camarilla invented that?”

6. Chunk
“Mr. LaCroix’s got no appointment scheduled for any goblins.”

7. Jeanette Voerman
“You smell new, little boy, like fabric softener dew on freshly mowed Astroturf.”

8. Mercurio
“OD-ing’s a painful way to go. Especially when your kneecaps are on the floor next to you.”

9. Ming Xiao
“Be at peace kindred, you stand amongst friends now.”

10. Prince LaCroix
“Each minor problem like a grain of sand, each night I inherit the desert.”

Even though you don't meet him, I would say Alistair Grout is the most fascinating character. Listen to all the tapes, he actually has more lines than main characters like Nines. His voice (or the actor's voice) is so soothing and hypnotic, even when he's talking bizzaro. He's the character I'd most like to meet.

But I can't argue with your list, everyone has their own preference and it's hard to pick one.

I agree, I think the chracters presented in Bloodlines give off that "real person" effect like no other game I've played, and the facial animations and body language they pull off is simply incredible. That being said I like Jack the most, carefree tough ol' nut who kinda gave up on making sense of the vampire politics a long time ago. He's the one who basically orchestrated the whole plot too, and boy do I love the plot this game has.

If I had to choose someone other than Jack then I would say it would probably be the Cab Driver. He seems so wise and smart for a mere man who just works the cab, I can see why Jack likes him. And the fact that he might even be Cain is really cool.

Another character worth mentioning is Samantha. While she's not one of my favorites, and she doesn't get that much dialogue in the game as other characters, I think the fact that she may have been in the player's past is an interesting detail.

But of course I like almost every character this game has to offer, even if it is a mere drunkard off the street, or a prostitute, every single character has so much depth to them.

"It is a mesmerizing liquid isn't it? The color, the bouquet, the form. When I was a kid, I used to wait for the snap of the rat trap. It would trickle out of the animal's face and ooze just far enough to coagulate around the cheese... a poetic death."
-- Vandal

"Real terror is not the sight of death, it is the fear of death. What is the fear of death? Terror of the unknown. Is it these eyes you peer into? No, I am not the unknown; You and I are closer kin than you and it were."
--Pisha

"I am the proprietor and salesman of the month several years in a row; The ladies call me "Oh god!" but you can call me Fat Larry with an F-A-T 'cause there's mo' of me to love."
-- Fat Larry

I forgot about Fat Larry, he's a cool guy too.

Nines is my fave. That said, I think the Prince is well presented for who he is, and Fat Larry is hilariously awesome. Every time he offers to take you out for steak I'm like, "Yes, please!" Meanwhile, I liked Ming until I got her ending, and I actually like Therese more than Jeanette.

Edit: Oh, and I like Strauss. Trying yet again to get his ending, missed it on my Tremere. I guess I have to be nice to the Prince even when he's doing something that's irrelevant to the Camarilla... meh.

Yeah, Jack is one of my favourites. Damsel is also one of em, and Lacroix has his moments...Strauss' comment when you talk about Lacroix is nice too.

Yeah, Fat Larry is hilarious, especially if you’re playing a Nosferatu. Even the storekeepers in this game are great characters. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s voiced by Phil LaMarr (Marvin from Pulp Fiction).

That’s just makes her a more compelling character, if you ask me. She’s so manipulative and evil; like LaCroix, only she’s good at it.

Well, don’t take this as gospel, but I don’t think it matter’s how you treat LaCroix; you just have to persuade Strauss to tell you “what [he] really thinks” about LaCroix.

LaCroix is fantastic in his little whiney weasel role. Jack is good but a bit too 1 dimensional (with each additional playthrough he just annoys me a bit more each time *shrug*. Cab driver is cool as hell. Ming solid being very devious and evil

Obviously Chunk!

Nothing like having him run to hit the dancefloor in the Asylum.

I will add that the quest including Lu Fang and Ji Wen Ja is probably one of the funniest ones in the game.
