Pro tip: You're not going to get far into the game with just combat skills. You need points into lockpicking, hacking and social skills like persuasion. Combat only comes into play really later in the game.
on a fun note, i could imagine a super tough vampire forcing a safe lock... but... lockpicking isnt really a deal breaker and, more over, you should be able to max your lockpick through average dexterity and modest skill statting.
that and i think all the "important" locks can be revisited later on. so you can focus on combat stats and interpersonal stats early game. then, during the final chapters, finish off your lock pick and revisit all the locks. its all waiting for you.
edit: i think theres even occult items for both dex and lcokpick... "two" more points you dont have to spend.
I always just save some XP that's unspent so when i come across a door i can't pick or a computer that i can't hack only then i spend points on that skill.
Skill check 10 doors exist but can always be bypassed by some other means, there's always another way.
Plus, the game gradually ramps up skill checks, and as you said, missed doors can be left for later (unless they're in the story parts, but those are rare).
Even then, there is only one door at 9 or higher difficulty that doesn't have a key or password or such (iirc) and that is in Lacroix's Venture Tower, which is skippable by talking to Chunk so one could lower dex to 1 and security to 2 before bonuses for maximum munchkinry, but that would have one using bloodbuff a lot for 2/3rds of the game so I don't recommend it unless you want a challenge. Well, that and the lowered dex would affect stealth and that is a vital skill.
But what really never fails is just leaving some loose XP floating around then spending on lockpicking only if there's no way to pick the lock (and you got all the items you can get at that point in time). And even then, as you said, 4-5 points in it is just fine.
Hopefully I had the ventrues power, so even if I hit people at 1-2 damages per hit, I can just suck their blood and they deal me almost no damage.
And I can open doors...
So well thank you :D
Later in the game, when firearms became useful, i used those.
*dominate*.... uhhhh
actualy... the ventrue are a very fair and well balanced clan. also, very generous and kind-natured.
Good luck winning via presence on the Hengeyoke
But really that's just a pain in the ass because of how bad the combat is. The player shouldn't be locked into an animation they can't escape from or cancel.
