What effect does the homosexual background have?
It doesn't list any effects like other backgrounds in character creation so is it just for flavor or does it have any in game effects? Specifically is it necessary to select the homosexual background in order to be able to use gay dialogue options/flirting, also will it lock straight dialogue options/flirting?

It changes the gender of your sire to the same one you chose, so it affects who sires you in the intro.

What gay dialogue options/flirting are you refering to?

Also, what straight dialogue options/flirting?

The only ones i'm aware of are the blood dolls, and both genders can flirt with them. You just need seduction for it.

The other one is i think the Flayton guy, you can flirt with him if you're a male, but that doesn't change with the histories, he can only be seduced by male characters because he's gay, not because your character is gay. Although i'm not sure that's exclusive to male characters, maybe female ones can seduce him too, i haven't tried.

And "flirting" with VV can be done with both genders too.

So yeah, i think it only affects the intro.

Thanks for the info. Also I wasn't referring to a specific dialogue, haven't actually played yet still making my character. Just heard that sort of thing was in the game and worried I'd get locked out if I chose one of the other backgrounds.

Nah, except that one guy, there's no (or very little) gender specific dialogue. You can seduce Flayton as a man, and you can sleep with Romero as a woman to complete their quests. But you can, of course complete their quests in other ways.

But none of it is affected by your character's sexuality, rather, what you can do is affected by the sexuality of other characters. That homosexual history was added a lot after the game released by the unofficial patch, so naturally, it doesn't change much, just some minor details for roleplaying purposes.

Everything relevant in the game, you can do regardless of your character's sexuality.

This is not completely true, with the homosexual history you won't be able to sleep with people not fitting with your orientation, like Jeanette when being gay or Romero when being lesbian.

Yes, it's the only time you can have that kind of fun in the game :)!

I always felts it was a waste not to have a scene with Heather after the third bond, after all, that is cementing your relationship, whatever form it takes. Heather is incredibly desperate and lonely, which is made even worse as a ghoul, cementing yourself as a caring lover, abusive dominator or anywhere in between would have been a good capstone before she dies/does not die to the Sabbat.

The stuff with Heather is messed up on several levels. Especially if you decide to abuse her, which the developers allowed you to do. So maybe it's better not to have a scene of the third bond, that would make it all too real. :steammocking:

But heather does drink the player's blood three times if you don't chase her away, doesn't she?

It is indeed messed up, but that is why I think it should be an option. Nothing graphic, no more so than the fade to black with Jeanette and some dialogue reflecting how she has been treated throughout the game. I am not even saying you should be forced to do so after the third bond, just it would make sense as an option.

There is a variety of times when one's actions in the game is shown to have consequences, like the model citizen quest that ends with Tawni committing suicide. I am proposing something similar.

Well, Heather dies after the third bond, so that's a major consequence of the player's actions. :)
But yeah, more interactions with her after the third bond would be nice, as it is, she just stands there repeating the same lines until you reach Hollowbrook hotel and then she dies. Which kinda loses its impact a little because by the end she becomes so robotic.

The game files have unused provisions for saving her which is why that is restored in the plus patch (telling her to stay inside no matter what), but otherwise, yes. Besides, she dies there whether you treat her well or not so that is a bad example.

Yeah, you're right.
Well, it could have been cool to see some expanded interactions with Heather, and probably a bunch was planned but the game was rushed out anyway so that's probably why they left it like that.

I found a mod you may be interested in https://www.nexusmods.com/vampirebloodlines/mods/38 it is for unofficial patch 10.3 and adds homosexual background to every background as well as adding a lot of gay dialogue options and making female only backgrounds also work for males (with some tweaks to them to make sense thematically). It is not my cup of tea, but perhaps others will enjoy it.
