Pretty sure that's a valid *Steam Key*--no way does Steamworks have all the CD Keys for every CD game on the planet...;) For instance, the Orange box and Skyrim's legendary Edition I bought on cd/DVD--both contain *Steam Keys*--when you activate them, you get the Steam install for them because they are already Steam games.
Yes, "adding them to the library" simply creates a shortcut to your game through the Steam interface, for games without a valid Steam Key. It doesn't "add the game" itself--meaning you can now throw away your CD/DVDs.--so hang on to your game disks..;)
Last time I did that I needed the unofficial patch *and* a copy of a No-CD executable. After that, the "original" played fine--but maybe the unofficial now includes the NOCD exe--it's been so long (since I bought the Steam & Gog versions of the game) that I can't clearly recall.
