Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Worth It?
While the reviews look good, the need for a third-party patch is slightly off-putting. I'm not sure why Valve picks up products that they don't intend to support.

Vampire: The Maquerade - Bloodlines was developed by Troika, who went bankrupt in 2005, only a few months after the game's release.
The only thing Valve could've done with the Steam release is include Wesp's Unofficial Patch in the game so we don't have to download it separately (like it is on GOG). They can't do anything else. They don't have the source code for the game and they don't release patches for products that are not owned by them.
Anyway, this game is a masterpiece and the UP Basic actually fixes every bug in the game, while the UP Plus also restores content (maps, quests) that was dropped by Troika for various reasons. VtMB has a high replay value and there are also mods like Clan Quest, Camarilla Edition, Final Nights and Antitribu to increase that.
One of the best RPGs of all time. Absolutely worth it.

I just want to second this. This game is a Masterpiece. I only play this game, Skyrim, the Witcher series, and Diablo 3 (when I just feel like mind numbingly killing stuff, lol)

I'm still playing through it for the first time, but I've had more fun playing it for 15 hours than I did with 100 hours in Fallout 4. I was put off by the patch too, but it was easy to install, and haven't had any problems with the game. Best thing I can say about it is that I already know I am going to want to play through it again.

I'm about to playthrough this game again after not playing it for a few years. The 3rd party patch was only about 450mb and was a few clicks of "next" to get it installed. Seriously though, this game is fantastic and I definitely recommend it if you enjoy RPGs with actual roleplay.

Hoping the upcoming Werewolf: The Apocalypse game is just as immersive.

Another thing too: VTM: Bloodlines has an awesome soundtrack with actual bands mixed in. Chiasm has a song in the game, so does Tiamat. Ministry even wrote a song for this game specifically.

This game is easily worth it. The unoffical patch makes the game leaps and bounds better shouldn't even play it without the patch. Nor should you be turned off by games needing/being better with mods.

Very worth it. Buy a cheap digital key on GeeTwoAye dot com, if you're on the fence. Or wait for it to be on sale. AND if you want the safest method, buy it now on steam. If you don't like it, get a refund.

I know what you mean. When I hear I have to install a patch for a game to work, red flags go way up. I don't want to get involved with tweaking game files because I am very inept with that stuff. I just want to hit "start" and enjoy the game. BUT.... this was not that bad. And that's coming from somenoe who has no experience coding, using consoles, modding, etc. As long as you read the directions on the community support pages, you will be fine. Download the game on steam (whichever method you buy it). Downloand the patch, install the patch (which will create a desktop shortcut). Play the game from the desktop shortcut always... and voila. Once you start playing this game, you will defintely appreciate it's story, graphics and unique vibe.

Even with the 9.7 patch, there were still glitches. Very few games are enjoyable with known bugs/glitches. I know you must dread seeing this statement, becuase nobody wants to "deal" with that. But if you fall in love with a game, you enjoy find a way to make it work. For me, personally, the only thinig I needed to do was in the gameplay: tap the squiggly key " ~ " (symbol is also called a "tilde") on the keyboard (right above the "tab" key). This would open up the game console. This was just a little box wher you can type in cheat codes or any command that would immediately affect the game. All I ever had to type in the box was "no clip" then hit enter (ignore quotes). Becuase sometimes a gate wouldn't open and you needed to turn into the Martian Manhunter from Justice Leage and walk through closed doors/barriers in your way to progress to the next level. Then once past a problamatic door, you type that command in again, and back to regular gameplay! Play around with this, it's actually quite fun! It's honestly a game that felt very different from any other game I've played. It's very indie feel but so good, you can't believe it's indie.

My advice... if you like RPG, Indie, Vampire, goth/punk rock/underground/anarch themes, and don't mind a little dark content in your game, then try this out. Get the patch. And play the game. Don't worry about the stuff I said above. When you hit your first roadblock, google the issue and you will quickly understand what I mentioned above and how literally quick and painless it is to do.

The game has absorbing atmosphere, good writing and dialogue, and memorable characters. Overall, it's one of my favorite games.

It's graphics are serviceable but dated, it's combat can be relatively simple, most of it's boss fights are unimaginative (in terms of fight mechanics), and despite wesp5's diligent work, many glitches remain (usually engine related ones).

Installing the patch can be kind of a pain the first time. Setting up your hotkeys the first time can also be kind of a pain. The readme and walkthrough included with the patch can walk you through them.

As mentioned above, valve can't release patches for the game. I personally disapprove of Activision setting the price as high as they do for a game this old while being unwilling to support it. How much it's worth is up to you. If you also don't feel like spending 20 on it, it often goes on sale for 5-10.

SO worth it! Look up FrozenFoxy on youtube, he has a video that shows you what patch to install and how to do it correctly. Im on my third play through and still finding new things!

It regularly goes on sale for 5$ if you're worried. Classic RPG. Great writing.

DONT play malkavian first run through.
Wesp5 May 5, 2017 @ 11:43pm

I would buy it retail again, its that good.
Too bad none ever made another.

I have the old disc version that my ex got me when the game was new. The game is so fun and immersive that I'll be getting it again on Steam.

The only thing Valve could've done...

The only thing Valve could have done was not force Troika to sit on a completed game for a year+ and then release in the midst of a Christmas hellstorm of MGS3/HL2/Halo 2. Yes, I'm bitter :steamsalty:

This game is worth every dollar. I played it many hours before Steam, and when i saw it here, bought it again and i'm on my third playthrough here. Might be 6 or so in total.

Even though this game is over 12 years old, it still looks pretty good, especially the awesome characters with their adorable facial expressions.

Further, an interesting story, cool combat system, pretty good dialogues, awesome skill system..and so on, and so on.

You're a vampire in the today's world, with most people not knowing that something like that exists. Next of being careful about that, it brings you many advantages because you will often have to face normal poeple who don't know who you really are.

And who are you? You can choose between 7 (i guess) vampire clans with their own advantages/disadvantages, what also affects the storyline a little and dialogues.

The different clans raise the worth of playing it through again extremely. You should definitely try the Malkavian, but as democles already said, not within the first playthrough.

You decide how to play. Wanna be a sneaky Sally and operate in the shadow? Well, choose your skills. Wanna kick the door and prepare a headshot first? Well, choose your skills.

Vampires here are respresented in a interesting way. No cruxifixes or garlic or crap like that. But be aware of fire and avoid shotguns near your head.

I could tell you much more, but just try it out. I'm pretty sure you won't regret. Still one of my favourite games and this won't change.
