Needing tips or help

I played this many years ago pretty successfully.. I think I did just free mode? But I do remember enemies and being able to clear them. Now, I'm trying a beginner level mission and a level 35 enemy just immediately shows up on every restart and starts annihilating all my stuff. When I did finally squeeze past that one enemy, a giant group of enemies came and one of them spawned like 20 plant enemy things and just wipe my stuff out. This is the beginner one? lol.. I must be forgetting how to do something.

Oh I see, it just sort of finished itself. Weird beginner level for this type of game lol. you'd think it would give you a bit of time to build up and explore the building types and such before unleashing the 3 enemies you gotta kill, but I suppose not!

I totally thought those enemies were gonna wipe me then a min later it says victorious lol

That's the expansion mission "Scions of Chaos"

I do wish that the game made it clear what is from the vanilla game and what is from the expansion (everything north of the mountains on the map) because typically the expansion missions are harder or at least more gimmicky than southern levels with the same difficulty rating.
