Cutscenes in high resolution?
Heya!

Love the game, but it really bugs me that the cutscenes are all in ver poor and low resolution, to a point that I even can't see what is happening besides some blurry animations. So, is there a way to improve them or get the high resolution ones, if there are any?

Thanks in advance!

I'm afraid the resolution is fixed and cannot really be changed. Off course, the smaller the screen you're watching it on, the better it's going to look.

The problem is not the user's resolution, but the poor encoding quality and bitrate! Please fix this, the cutscenes look like they were quite well made originally, but then the video compression destroyed all the work that went into them.

Yeah, I agree with you! They are well made and should therefore be presented that way! I don't think it should be that hard to replace them with higher quality ones, except making a bigger download file for the consumers. Sure it will cost both money and time, but I think it would be worth the hassle! Right now it kinda destroy the beautiful atmosphere when a low quality cutscene blurs the whole screen in the middle of the drama!

And what I´d like to add - I´m playing on a relatively small screen, and I cant determine anything beyond some blurry movements in the cutscenes. As soon as we´re back to standard scenes, everything looks great - but those cutscenes really bug me...

Now, this is strange... Yes, the cutscenes also show with horrible artifacts for me, as if they had been resampled or badly compressed, to the point where some objects are almost unrecognizable.

But this is not "intrinsic" to the game -- check this YouTube walkthrough:

I see no artifacts there! And that would be AFTER some compression for YouTube.

So, either the Steam version was horribly "recompressed", or some bug popped up with my configuration. Any ideas?

Cheers!

Nice find! As you say, maybe it is only the Steam version that has these over-compressed videos. So that means the better quality videos exist and the developer should be able to fix the Steam version, if they wanted to... the quality of the CGI is above that of other HOGs and so that would certainly be worth a little work for a patch.

It's quite unusual that you have to go to youtube to look at videos in better compression quality... :D

Unfortantly yes. The demo/full game on the Windows Store has better cuscenes.

Is it possible it's a decoding issue? I found myself sucked into the game and just pretended I was playing an old game like Myst during the cutscenes.

I'm not too bothered by this. but it's strange

Hi guys, we will try to fix this in one of the future patches. Thanks for letting us know about the issue!

Do you have an estimate date of when you plan to fix it? I already have the game but just can´t bring myself to play with such a low res. cutscenes.

Not yet. We will try to make time for it as soon as it's possible.

Three months, and no fixes for the badly compressed video. It's not like it's a game bug, this is just bad video compression on the Steam version, while other versions are fine.

What is it, a licencing issue? Did someone require a lesser quality build due to download size?

I almost quit the game because of the abysmal quality of the videos! Regardless of usefulness (or rather lack of) to proceed in the game, they immediately take away your immersion and make you cringe while watching them.
How is it possible that the quality is so bad in the steam version yet there's another version that they're actually decent?
I doubt they're working on it and if this is a thing with Artifex Mundi steam versions I'll think twice..or thrice.. before getting another game..

It's pretty sad how such a beautiful and immersive game gets destroyed by beatutful cutscenes in bad quality. Artifex Mundi, is this something you are looking into? Or just a response to get us calm for the moment?
