- Choose the one for "not talking". (There's a small, possibly closed, eye at the top-right corner that lets you see each piece. You can click to select a specific part to work on from there.)
- On the first big box on the left, you should see two smaller, red, boxes. Click it once. Now that layer is set to be active when the mic doesn't detect anything.
- Now choose the piece you want for "talking".
- Go to the same red box, but click it twice. That sets the piece to be active only when the mic detects enough sound.

If there's anything else you'd like assistance with in the program, a I'll be more than happy to help to the best of my abilities.
Yes, you need two images: one for closed, one for open. For every piece that moves independently or changes states needs an image of its own.
There's a couple ways to do construct the avatar. What kind of an avatar are you making?
Something simple, like a static avatar that just changes when you're talking?
Or will there be other moving parts, like blinking of the eyes, or pieces otherwise moving independently of the main body, e.g. a hat bouncing on the character's head?
You can access the editing section when you open the program and hover your mouse on the app. There's a picture of a pencil on the bottom-right corner. By clicking it, you can access the editing-mode.
While in this mode, you can exit it from the big X on the top-left.
(When I mentioned "Now that layer is set to be active", I was actually talking about the image. The sentence should be "Now that image is set to be active when the mic doesn't detect anything." Sorry for the confusion, I mistakenly used a wrong word. Layers are actually a different thing. )
There are some excellent videos that can be found on Youtube, but I'm also happy to provide what information is required/asked for. I know specific information can be hard to find at a quick glance.
