I play a very wide diverse set of games and so your comment is lacking any actual impact.
looking back cause this was necro'd I think I was more speaking about how the labels looked, take for example a game like diablo or its sequel and its loot, they made the window that popped up stylish with the mods listed and named with all its stats.
ToME most likely does this but its just not as attractive looking of a window, it could look better in how it displays information like this.
these are my opinions about the game, I've designed similar games that used a tile engine and a data matrix that was the map to move around on, and I am no graphics wizard either. I mean here is something I made (if you wanna talk ugly):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dn_5GDpgeuE&list=PLE157F6ABE772926D
So I say the beautification thing out of just positive criticsm from someone new that wanted to experience ToME. It is less about the roots of roguelikes and more about making it more then what it already is.
I've played it a bit more since I made those comments and had some fun with it but still haven't had a big itch to play rougelikes atm.
Interesting that you think that loading times is an issue for a tile engine, what are you playing on a 386/16MHz?
I articulated my point that I speak more of the style or lack of the style, its my opinion. It's also of my opinion that you guys bashing me saying its not my type of game honestly have no idea about the games that I play, resorting to personal attacks on me is not constructive whatsoever and paints you as a dinkus not me.... also if you don't know what the hell your talking about why bother, change the color of a pixel for a sprite in a tile engine isn't going to slow it down anymore then anything else cosmetic. if its a 24 or 32 bit sprite that is the same size and the previous art it wouldn't load any slower if it had a better "style".
you know what takes longer, generating a randomly generated world of data matrixes and that involves ZERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRO graphics.
please get a clue.
and so I'm left looking at people playing rougelikes as the rednecks of the gaming community (not the devs as they are the ones with the talent to create a game and for that I respect their efforts) if you think sticking with ASCII characters is all you need to make an enjoyable game, cool, but I disagree
You can disagree with my stance but please stop telling me what games I will or will not enjoy, as that is not relevant to my disliking of the styling of the game.
Anyway, as someone who loves this game and wishes OldRPG would be updated for the latest version, it would nice if the game was more popular so that we not only had good UI mods, but also tile mods too.
Anyway, Dungeonmans is a nice TOME-like some of you might like. Although I fully expect the knights to crap all over it for various reasons (like they do in YouTube comments).
Yes, that's right, I said TOME-like as that is a good description, and I feel we need as many as possible!!!
Wow, thank you so much, your are AWESOME!!! I LOVE YOU!!!! Cocainea nd hookers for everyone! Brownies too!
Three times a charm for ultimate gratitude and ass kissing.
EDIT - I will be using the http://www.filedropper.com/tome-addon-oldrpg_3 link as I guess that is the most up-to-date version.
Will there be anyway to stay udpated on your (or whoever's) work?
Edit: Or look at Eschalon also an oneman project and a turnbased Roguelike with very nice Char and Combat-animations, also day night and weather effects without beeing a 3D-Game at all...
Don't get me wrong. I love ToME and I got used to its looks.
ASCII graphics ... those look ugly lol. Basically anything that isn't ASCII is amazing. That's why I think ToME's graphics are perfect for a minimalist approach. Then again, I could be biased lol.
A UI update and graphical overhaul would increase the games appeal. I've recommended the game to several friends, but inevitably they tell me the graphics are a turn-off.
I'm not complaining, as stated I love the game and will play it regardless, but the OP does have a valid point worth considering.
