just wanted to ask - is there a classic save / load system or is it more like save only on exit and death means it's over forcing me to play the same over and over again?

It Is save only on exit, it has tradioninal Permadeath in it. However theres diffaculty modes and then theres permadeath thats also cehckable so they are seperate, i have 500 hours and i have never done the non permadeath to unlock things it makes the game a lot more fun and enjoyable to play it perma :D

Donators/Steam Buyers can choose Exploration Mode as permadeath setting, which gives infinite lives. Doesn't mean you can win the game with an especially bad build though. I think enemies heal back to full when you die.

There are 3 death modes:
Roguelike (1 life)
Adventure (Up to 7 lives)
Exploration (unlimited - donator/steam owner only)
