I went into the game data and uncompressed the music file and counted 42 tracks. Can I add to that file and will the game automatically play the new tracks if I insert files of the proper format? Or would I have to name the new tracks the same name as tracks already in the file; can I only replace tracks and not just add to them, assuming I can even do that?
Check out the OldRPG tileset mod, it comes with a bonus Custom Soundtrack file. I checked the actual content of the file and it's nothing really cryptic.
All the tracks are in .ogg file so you should be able to add your own by converting your wav or mp3 into ogg, renaming them to the mod's soundtrack's name you wish to replace and overwriting with your own.

Here's the link to the mod page, scroll down to the description and you should have all the instructions needed to install the base soundtrack mods and files.
It's an old post but as long as the Workshop is still around (I'm assuming it is (I'm using a very limited internet connection right now and can't check myself)) you should still be able to find the mod mentioned, you just have to dig around for it. If I can find it later on I'll post a new link.
