Button to attack nearest enemy
Last time I played the game there was no such thing (or I didn't notice it). I found some modification in workshop, but it's not working anymore, probably because of different versions or something. DarkGod, please, could you add such a usefull command to ToME? There are so many battles that player can handle without using any ability, and in moments like these you just want to press one single button to clear your way quickly. I think, many people will find this quite usefull.

The game does target the nearest enemy. If you just want to bump attack (melee) an enemy you can move toward them, or hotbar the Attack skill and if there's only one enemy next to you it will auto target and perform the attack, same with any melee talent.

There's an option in the menus somewhere if your game is not doing this.
Hopefully I understood what you were saying, and was helpfull.

Also it will target but not auto carry out ranged attacks/skills. For those you need to either click on the enemy while wielding a bow/sling or hotbar the Shoot command, it will auto target nearest enemy, and then you hit confirm which I believe is Enter.

Do you know about Stone Soup, for example? Player can press a single button (TAB by default) and no matter how he is far from the enemy, if he can see it, he will travel to it and smash its face, then he comes to the next one. Repeat. IIRC, "attack" command in ToME works differently.

There is no default 'auto attack nearby target' button.
there is an 'auto explore' button which is Z by default. But that is the closest you will find.

Otherwise, when you cast a targeted ability or spell, the game generally will target the nearest enemy by default, but will not cast it unless you press the same button again.

i.e. Flame is my '2' ability, when i press it, the game default wants to cast it on the enemy 4 squares away. But will not unless i press '2' again or click the enemy etc.

Hopefully that answers your question
