There's an option in the menus somewhere if your game is not doing this.
Hopefully I understood what you were saying, and was helpfull.
Also it will target but not auto carry out ranged attacks/skills. For those you need to either click on the enemy while wielding a bow/sling or hotbar the Shoot command, it will auto target nearest enemy, and then you hit confirm which I believe is Enter.
there is an 'auto explore' button which is Z by default. But that is the closest you will find.
Otherwise, when you cast a targeted ability or spell, the game generally will target the nearest enemy by default, but will not cast it unless you press the same button again.
i.e. Flame is my '2' ability, when i press it, the game default wants to cast it on the enemy 4 squares away. But will not unless i press '2' again or click the enemy etc.
