sandworm lair...
so I had an excellent run with a dwarven bulwark and I wanted to finish the journey into darkness quest and went into the sand hole... how do you traverse this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ lair without dying randomly to a sand cave in? really frustrating experience I have to say...

The sand falling isn't random. The unstable sand tiles will crash 15 turns (or somewhere around there, can't remember exact number) after they were dug up, and you can mouseover a tile to see if it's a normal tile or unstable (all the wall tiles are unstable, all the non-wall tiles are normal)

Basically, follow behind a sandworm to move between stable areas. Sometimes you need to wait for a sandworm heading in a direction towards unexplored territory.

Better option. if you see a belt or light that gives you undead status buy it and keep it. That way you don't need to breath so if sand collapses on you you just take some damage and can, slowly, dig your way out. Also useful in flooded dungeons.

thanks for the tips!
I did it today by following the sandworms, the undead status is also a very good idea

the digging action didn't seem to do much unfortunately, but I equipped a teleportation rune for emergencies which worked fine

The teleport rune is good but be aware you can teleport into a filling hole which means you need to breath untll you can get out. Having an "of the deep" item (usually armor or helm) can help with this as can being undead (lich or skeleton but not ghoul because ghoul.)

'Of the deep' - unless it changed recently - only allows to breath underwater, not inside walls. So undead belt/light is generally better.
Otherwise, what is said above. Plus, in addition to tp rune - all mobility items or talents can be useful to different degree here. (they are also useful overall)

I feel like suffocating in the sandworm lair is a rite of passage for this game. I still hate that dungeon, but at least I don't die there anymore.

I just got a mod that turns it into a regular dungeon, I did the gimmick enough.

I've come to think of sandworm lair as one of the more enjoyable dungeons. I appreciate having an area where you don't just auto-explore everywhere.

Yep. It is a different vibe. You change mental gears to slow down and take it easy.

When you get more experienced with it, you'll look forward to Sandworm Lair because it has a great chance of spawning T5 gear from the golden chests.

I find it very satisfying to discover a faraway room on the edges that is hard to get to. But I can see how people find the format annoying

Yeah, I agree it's a great shakeup too - for me, it's not about "oh it's just horribly designed / it's clunky / it's badly made" etc., I just like normal dungeons more lmao

Really do think its gimmick is fun and creative though
voronin_mike Nov 30, 2024 @ 5:25pm
Agree that the gimmick is fun. Though it does require a bit of preparation (as above - mobility, Track, light radius, which are all useful everywhere, but here are crucial), which is why I personally don't go there as a first T2 dungeon. After Forest and Daikara you usually have all you need, with possibly bying a couple of items in shops (on Insane there are more drops, so most runs you can even skip shops).

I'd recommend playing a few times first because once you understand the gimmick it can be interesting but if you are tired of doing the sandworm lair for the 50th there are a few mods to make it less annoying to explore, since after enough runs it's not really a challenge it just slows you down more than anything.

https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse/?appid=259680&searchtext=sandworm&childpublishedfileid=0&browsesort=textsearch&section=

There are mods to reveal the floor or give you an item that reveals walls to aid in exploring all parts of the floors, or a mod that stops the walls collapsing (although you will need to disable it at one point later in the game).

Also the zomnibus pack https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=203060064 has alternate layouts option for levels , the one for sandworm lair has the big worms that make wider , more orderly tunnels , which keeps the original idea but is more streamlined.
