Trainer mode with Cheat Engine
After losing a few starting characters, you might want to make the early game a little easier. You can do this with Cheat Engine.

1) Set 'Scan Type' to 'Exact Value'.
2) Set 'Value Type' to 'All'.

Current HP, current stamina, and gold are stored as Double types. To enable invincibility, set current HP to 999 then check the 'Active' box. Cheat Engine will force the value of HP back to 999 at the start of each round. During the early game, it is very unlikely that your character will take 999 damage during a single round.

This might interfere with the learning process involved with losing a charcter and learning from it.

Also, there's an addon that gives a toggleable invincibility, and others that make it easier. Also, there is the "easier" difficulty setting, or you can give yourself infinite lives with exploration mode, no addons or special action required.

Just use Easier-Exploration mode if you're not doing well at all and need a crutch to do anything at all. The mode is there just for these situations. And don't forget to do the tutorial at least once, and ask for help in chat on combat strategy (which will basically boil down to make sure you only ever 1v1, and know the enemy's abilities).

Yeah, and not needing to worry about healing isn't going to help you learn the game.

Playing roguelikes with cheats? Isn't difficulty the whole point of the game?

It's the whole point of BEATING the game, yes. But some people may find it more expedient to practice the end game without having to redo the start game every time they die. It's similar to using save states or credit feeding in an arcade shmup - no it's not beating the game, yes it is good practice when used right.

Isn't that what exploration mode is for? That would be better practice than what is suggested in the first post here.

Rougelike isn't it's only genre. I wouldn't be playing it if it were.
