Problems with Graphics or Crashes? Look here!

1) (MAC ONLY) Disable Steam overlay by rightclicking it in your Steam library, Properties and unchecking "Enable Steam Overlay while in-game".

2)If your game crashes on startup, try moving the te4-web.dll out of the games folder. Also update your graphics and audio drivers and change your default audio device to a different one.

3) Make sure to disable all addons (only for crashes after Main Menu), happens especially after patches which change the game code.

4) (WINDOWS ONLY) If your game crashes on saving/exiting, make sure to run it as admin under windows.

Many crashes, especially right after launching the game, are caused by a lack of support for shaders by your graphics hardware. To disable shaders follow these steps:

5a) If you can get into the menu, turn them off in Options->Video Options.

5b) If you cant get into the menu because the game is crashing on launch:

Use this as launch option in Steam (rightclick-properties in Steam library):

--safe-mode
With 2 minus at the beginning, no typo here.

This should disable shaders and hopefully fix the crash.
If it works, remove the launch option again, so it doesn't keep resetting your options.

6) If you are still crashing, make sure to post the te4_log.txt with a description of your problem, your operating system and graphics card in a new thread:

WINDOWS: Use this as launch option in Steam (rightclick-properties in Steam library):
--flush-stdout

This makes sure all infos is instantly written to the logfile.
Now start the game and do whatever you have to do to crash it.

Find te4_log.txt, it is located in the games directory, same location as the .exe.
To get there, rightclick the game in your Steam Library->Properties->Local Files->Browse Local Files.
Upload the logfile somewhere like pastebin.com so we can take a look at it.
Remove --flush-stdout launch option as it decreases the games performance.

LINUX:
For Linux users, the log is not automatically generated. You will need to run the game with something like > /home/te4_log.txt added to it. You can also add this to the launch options via Steam if you are using it.
Upload the logfile somewhere like pastebin.com so we can take a look at it.


7) In very rare cases your visual c++ redistributeables might be corrupted, reinstalling all of them could solve your problem.

This doesnt say anything about shaders, but turning off shaders can only be beneficial if you want to make the game as stable as possible. Just dont forget to turn it back on again later.
The link says it might be due to your default audio device or old drivers.

Thanks alot,I'll try to do something about my ol'Os and uncompability video drivers.
Maybe buy new PC later,and definately play ToME,because i like it and bought full-pack.

You can try upgrading your graphic drivers and change your audio device in the windows settings, maybe it helps!

I've downloaded non-steam version of game(full-pack with all chapters) and it runs
perfectly! Maybe you can explain me what's the difference?Never the less I'll try to
find difference(reason) why is steam version reboots my PC =)

When I start the game, I get a flickering screen, and disabling shaders doesn't do anything.

I don't have any mods installed, and I do have all three DLC installed.

Edit: Reducing resolution to 1080p fixed the flickering.

Game crashes at launch on new computer. I performed all the troubleshooting in the original post. Using safe mode the game crashes and relaunches immediatly after claring teh dialogs that pop after launching.

Please try the website version from https://te4.org/download to see if its related to the steam version.

The non-Steam version sees to work fine. How do I get the Steam version to work, or does it need to be patched? Thanks for your help.

I had been playing ToME fine for the past few weeks. Today, I saved my game and went to the main menu to start a new character and the game crashes on the loading screen to start character selection. I can load my old save and play fine, but trying to make a new character crashes the game.

Any new addon? Do you get an error or does the game close right away ? Does the screen flicker ? If an error, please send a screenshot

No flickering. The loading screen will become a little brighter before it crashes at around 91-93%. I used all my old addons that I had before and haven't downloaded any new ones recently. I'll disable them all and troubleshoot that way.

Ok, so i disabled all the addons and i was able to start a new game. I'm guessing one of the addons doesn't agree with the new version of the game. Thanks for your help! :)
