Forbidden tome: "The day it came" event bugged, cannot complete it.

After reading the tome you get put into a tutorial (the teachers abode) for the class it unlocks (cant remeber the name). I cannot get past step 3 with the life link ability. I've tired many times but despite being at 1 health and having the link active with enough entropy to kill me, it does not work, and the trigger for completing the link never fires (you need to do it twice according to the tutorial).
