The PC version has some launch issues (definitely not unplayable) just slightly irritating.
In terms of controls, they are easier on a console however if you configure the keys to suit comfortability, there is no issue. I had WASD for movement with SHIFT to run.
For your other question, the answer is no, it is not a remake but merely a port to PC. As for the 2008 version, that is rather poor in my opinion. I find games tend to become degraded when in a "change of hands" but I am still in hope for a remake/remastered version of this game. In one of the discussions here you'll find the solutions to resolving your Resolution, Startup & Sound/Video issues.
This would be the best version of the game in my opinion, from its story and puzzles, to the suspense and horror. Just know what you're getting and the possible issues to expect.
The pc version was actually launched 12 years ago along with a PS2 and Dreamcast port, it just so happens that Atari decided to launch it last week on steam.
This version released on steam has a lot of issues, the disc version is just fine. The one we installed on Steam is the same as the one you install from GoG.com and that may be the very issue that causes all these complaints about glitching and resolution. Even not being able to advance the plot.
Hilarious!
Now I am pissed for not having opted for the PS2 or DC versions instead.
I also found plenty of glitches and unfair gameplay ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ throughout the damn thing, but I'm inclined to guess that it's the same thing across all versions.
BTW, I played the latest updated version from GOG, which runs flawlessly, no need for any fixes or anything.
how about soundtrack on GOG ver?
