How wide should I mine?

Right now my mining is relatively wide-ish, a little over 100 wide on both mining and lumber. I have 500 miners on each side and am regularly getting into the billions now in terms of money. How should I expand, or should I expand at all?

I only expand to the sides when i see that the rest of the rails are kept busy enough and at the top everything runs smoothly. Then i add 10 or 20 on each side BUT i change the rail build option from basic to advanced every time. When the sides come close to the top rails i change it again to basic an level out all rails and then repeat ... not sure if this is the best way but i seems to work out fine :D

How do you go about expanding? I really only have one group for gems and one group for lumber. Do you buy miners and drag em down, or do you just grab the miners you already have and put them down there to start mining?

In the beginning i did drag a few miners down but now i just wait until they make their way down or time it with buying new miners too and place those down there :)

Oh they eventually move down? I thought they just didn't even bother unless you manually placed them lol

Yeah sometimes it takes a while but they do.
