Also, forging some magical items can be worth it.
The following is a very generic list of "nice things" you can get from Astral, with some S/E crosspaths included. They might not be optimal for your current situation which varies based on who you are, who your opponent is and at what stage of the game you're on.
Spell Focus and Void Eyes are pretty great items to forge for your mages, they allow you to get more out of MR-resistable spells.
Crystal/Slave Matrixes can be forged for some advanced communion shenanigans if you have the required crosspath.
Boosters are always a good gem sink, so Starshine Skullcap.
If you happen to be able to get yourself up to S5, consider Banner of the Northern Star.
Some pearl consuming spells to consider:
Doom, Will of the Fates, Antimagic, Power of the Spheres, Light of the Northern Star and Baleful Star. There's more, but those are some that I've used to good effect.
