Many of the desura mods can be found here as well. Also the dom4mods forum is active and i think most of the desura mods can be found there as well. There is a link to dom4mods somwhere here on the steam forum.
Also check here: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showforum=21
It should have most of the Desura mods, as Kristoffer says AND some more (In particular, it might have conversions of Dom3 stuff that was not shown on Desura)
Offering us the game here and telling us the game community doesnt largely accept steam and its all so complicated is very strange.
Workshop should be naturally come with every game and is necessary for a mod-friendly one and its one of my biggest demands towards dominions 4.
If there woould be no other reason theres still the missing mods (wheres the moder? no download? its gone, does someone have it) all those probs with third party hosters and moders losing interest. If its on steam it is available.
And setting up a workshop isnt magic, the more for a game like dom with easy mod implementation.
p.s.: As example when I tried to get more maps (was at desura if I remember right) half of the maps were gone.
One problem I see with Workshop implementation is the fact that Steam Workshop downloads will NOT work with non-Steam versions of Dominions 4, which can lead to unnecessary confusion -- after all, as it currently is, a modder/mapper can point people to one location to download their files, rather than saying "Steam players can download here, but non-Steam players have to download a seperate file here."
old mods and maps are no longer avalible as stated.
i also i prefer steam for convenience.
then with desura maybe (i dont know what will happen one way or another) going down its gonna push me to a fan site to get mods now which im less then thrilled about. i wasnt super happy with desura but im less happy with the way it moving then i was about desura. because no one uses the mods forum here.
Please use a search of this forum before posting. This topic has been discussed many times and there is much information already available. A number of major modders have clearly stated they won't host their mods on Steam so frankly, the workshop is of limited value.
Saying that you demand the developers do something because you want it isn't likely to get the result you want. Try asking nicely? There are pages and pages of requests for features on Desura and Illwinter has been very responsive in providing what they can in the time they have as part time developers.
But ... do you know the old saying, that the customer is to be treated like king? I wont sink to my knees and say 'oh my most wonderfull game developers, you took my money and I#m glad of it, I wish it was more, could you please be so kind to deliver some features that would be extraodinary great and of course couldnt be demanded out of you, but your caritative minds might bring it on us like christmass from heaven ... oh please you half-gods with programming skills give us the following ...' 8-)))
Did you have something like this in mind?
Well, I stated my oninion, that steam workshop support should be automatic for a game that claims to support mods and is sold on steam. period.
Of course moders are free to offer what and where they want, ior simply not offer it. I´m part of a Total War mod-team and its not on steam cause of size and reluctance of other members. Thats ok - but not having the option is bad.
Sorry, but thats simply ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Really funny that you know that the none-existant steam versions wpnt work. and I'm really wondering why none-steam users should use them ...
I´ve spent dozens of hours an totalwarcenter to help "newbs", "umsecure about windows/their OS people" to implement the mods the right way.
But there are simple ways and solutions to get this right. To my experience there are two main probs:
1. Users that do not know anything and even worse are unwilling or unable to read.
2, Mods posted without any or detailed instructions (also not considering different OS/steam/not steam)
But the existing differences how to install a mod on steam or not steam are really marginable as long as you know half way what your doing and/or are able to follow instructions, and there is no necessarity for differnet files; separate downloads. Despite what you say they will work - its just a thing where and sometimes how to install. In fact the good ole install as admin feature and virtual store with win7 and others causes much more probs than steam.
As far as the devs are concerned you are right, but I was referring to that statement from mormacil:
sorry for mixing that up.
Again, like I said, modders could make their files available both on Steam for Workshop users and on a file-hosting site for non-Steam users, but that seems like more work for little benefit. After all, installing mods is INCREDIBLY easy for Dominions 4:
Step 1) Download mod.
Step 2) Move mod to your Dominions 4 "mods" folder.
That's it. That's hardly something you need Workshop to do for you.
I'll agree Workshop is very handy for more complicated programs like Total War, where the user needs to fiddle with command line tweaks and mod compatability, but the cost-to-benefit ratio for Dominions 4 seems very low to me (especially since there already exists other mod-centric Dominions 4 websites, like SensateSensei alluded to.) ;)

Would need no change to browser, no fidling around with file, no unpacking in some cases", no" is it still there?", no "can I trust this link?" ...
