You have the best expectations to be a "modern" journalist or politician 8-)
Well its everything around (death-)cursed and horror-marked and that global thing with the darkness.
RoS is not my most hated spell. but that day, it sure was.
Otherwise its probably horror seed, because it seems like such fun but its practically useless in every way. Not only does it require high astral and blood, it also requires blood 9 and takes many turns to even work. Also when you kill the afflicted commanders/units a horror spawns which fights your troops.
I've used, and had used against me, wrathful skies, firestorm, EQ, astral tempest, backfield SCs, creeping doom, mass assassination, mass seduce, ritual gem-baiting, and various other claptrappery to defeat armies without equal or greater 'magepower' or force to use against them.
RoS gets more fame, and therefore people use it more, but it's not the only option that does that, or the earliest. It notably works decently against armies casting every mass buff in the history of everything, which is a simple tactic people use, which is also notably overpowered - that RoS traps are required to defeat armies scripted to 'be invincible' is a damning indictment of mass buffs, not one of RoS. If someone can script every buff spell, but not clear provinces with ritual speed movement or use vanguard groups, odds are good 'scripting every buff spell' is too powerful.
The game is supposed to be about reading your opponent, and using strategic movement to counter them, just like chess. That RoS traps exist isn't the problem - the problem is a meta that relies on massing big armies and using them like clubs and not expecting your enemy to counter that. Remove all counters to 'big club armies' and you end up with big mageball armies the game, where more mages/buffs always win, and then why even bother playing.
