Ah, thanks. Any general idea where about's in the story that is.
Later in the game you will go underground through the mines. There is a central mine track you will follow here. Halfway down the hall there is a lit room to the side. This will take you down deeper into the mine, where you will read a note about a "sea-thing", and here is where the jump scare is.
This part of the game is optional, though you need to do it for the whole ending. Central to this part is a puzzle, and you can just look up the answer to the puzzle without spending time to do it.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you need more details!
beginning of the game there are a few pop ups Traps (that can startle you) and then as others have mentioned there is a mine scene with a pop up scare, run away moment. some erie music, whispery and the fact there is a mysterous element sounds but really not bad. I used head phones so I could hear things better which normally means I will jump more when things pop up. Betrayer is getting more than this game, and the insane asylum in Thief deadly shadows is far wrost
In my opinion they should not have included a level like that in an otherwise completely peaceful game.
