I recommend playing the game on your own and making a decision after that because although it is probably the most frequent complaint that we are getting from our community, it is still relatively rare in the global view, taking into account all people playing The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
The saving system in our game is automatic. The auto-save happens after you complete a bigger event like solving a murder scene, it is not based on how long you walk around the world. Once you see text saying "Saving scene" you can rest assured that the game was saved indeed.
This system works fine for most people but we are aware it is not perfect thus one of the things we are going to improve in the upcoming Unreal Engine 4 version of the game apart from graphics is the saving system.
I hope that makes the situation clearer for you.

Great game, beautiful scenarios, scary details, exiting stories, .. This game has it all. Exept a solution for quick saving midgame, when I have to go somewhere in the real world. As an adult player I do not have a lot of time to play, and I really don't like leaving my computer on for hours. So, please - some sort of save option?
Yeah, the lack of a proper save system is why I haven't touched the game since the day I realized what I was going to have to put up with. Looking forward to that patch, the game seems neat otherwise.
we understand your point thus we decided to release an official statement on this matter. You can find it here.
